How do you go about getting into it? Are there any courses that I could do??? I've looked on the net but found nothing. I'm from Birmingham so there's gotta be something around here.

I think it'll be a case of asking around your local colleges (the ones for 16+ and 18+ people).

My local one has full workshops for cars and bikes.
They offer a number of courses - evening, part-time, day and full-time.

Start out with a basic service your bike one (this is a wheel, look it goes round). That gets you a basic qualification that you might be able to start work at a bike shop with.
The other courses give more advanced qualifications. A popular one with local bike shops is the one day a week. They send their trainee mechanics (gives me oodles of confidence that next time I take my bike in Rolling Eyes).

I think you'll just have to do a little investigation and be prepared to travel. Try phoning and just ask. Then get onto the mailing list for the college prospectus.

Failing that go and talk to a local bike shop and ask what they'd be looking for to take on a trainee. Some might do on the job stuff and be happy to train someone who knows a sprocket from a cam-chain.

If you're really, really, really stuck (can't emphasis that enough) you could try this link (for cars though) - you have been warned Very Happy

Oh, FYI just done a google. Looks like you want to try the City College Birmingham - motor vehicle courses are this link.

HTH Thumbs Up

there was a course run by one of the local glasgow colleges for 12ish nights at some silly amount like £57, have a look around and there may be something similar in your area

I'm probably doing a degree in Motorcycle engineering and design. I imagine I'll learn how to do loads on my bike.

If you're looking to be a pro it doesn't have mechanic accrediation if there is one.

looks like a standard mechanical engineering course with the 3rd part tailored to automotive, if its anything like my degree you spend the first couple of years doing mostly maths and feeling superior when guest lectures like when they tried to teach cost accounting as though it was actualy hard.

Well buy me, about 15 miles from you there is a motorbike shop that is offering a apprenticeship place.
So you go to college for 1-2 days then work at that place for 2-3 days, getting paid and experience. May be worth looking into.

The place is called the motorcycle warehouse.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

+1. It's what I did when I left school, cars first then bikes. I gave it up to earn nearly 8 times as much working shifts as a crane operator.

Might have changed now but I doubt it somehow.

Its not changed. Promise you that.
