 |
|
Hi All,
I'm hoping someone could shed some light here. I have two car navigation devices at home. One is a TOM-TOM XL3 and the other is a Garmin Nuvi 200w. They don't get used much but somehow I would like to connect them up to the motorbike.
I understand I will need a plastic cover for rain proof, a GPS holder and some wires and fuse etc.
Can someone recommend where I can pick-up these items to attach my GPS devices. Also, what other items I may need. I'm not even sure what these are technically labelled as I can do a google search myself and find out.
Any help is needed.
Oh BTW: Is it relatively easy to install?
Many thanks ____________________ 2010 Honda FES S Wing 125 |

This is my solution for mounting the satnav, seems to work just fine. "Water-proof" may be stretching the point, it's certainly water resistant, and it hasn't borked my sat-nav a few times riding in the rain, but I wouldn't want to park up and leave the satnav mounted in it all night in the rain or anything.
Then something along these lines for the socket - which is "mounted" (duct taped) under my seat, facing down to try to prevent any water getting in - stuck a little sealant around where the wire enters too, for the same purpose.
So far it's been in place, along with a cheapo chinese satnav recommended on these forums (also from e-bay), for about 2000 miles and hasn't missed a beat. ____________________ - CBT: 02/01/11 Theory: 26/04/11 Mod 1: 19/05/11 Mod 2: 19/08/11

Ok, so your items costs are in the region of £27. Tell me has it been worth it. I mean construction wise. Is it solid and well built for the money?
And the socket, which bit does it go in the battery? Does it have a fuse? Someone said that it needs to be fused?

Ahh,
I see it does come fused.
Does it come with install manual?
Sorry, I'm a total newbie in this.

i know its a few days old, but on the offchance you are still thinkin of forking out for a new satnav i thought it was worth pointing out that you can buy headphones that pick up the audio from your exisitng satnav speaker. Muuuuuuuch cheaper! See here

I've tried both the bag onto the bars style Givi bag and the more tight fitting generic case that allows you to use a RAM mount. Both in my opinion were OK in themselves, but crap in use.
The Givi is more suited to a bike with proper handlebars rather than clip ons - and even on that bike the glare on screen was enough to make it unusable, let alone when it lays almost flat across the top yoke on the TT.
The other case was slightly better in that you could mount the thing closer to vertical, but glare was still a big problem. In fact the only time I've managed to get a car satnav mounted well enough to see clearly on a bike was when it was mounted under an opaque black screen right at the back above the clocks on a GPZ.
The other issue I find with a satnav fitted to a bike is that it just seems so far away from the normal eyeline (as opposed to in a car) that it becomes too distracting to try and look at it.
FWIW, the best solution I ended up with is a car satnav that will transmit directions via bluetooth, and a little bluetooth receiver that you plug earphones into. Satnav can be chucked in tankbag / bumbag / rucksack / under seat and it lets me concentrate more on the road. ____________________ Macie
