I've been looking at lace up boots as the zip up boots are always too big around my calves and ankles.

Something like these look well comfy

They are a bit short though. What are peoples opinions on the protection offered by these types of boot? Would you ride in them? How important is shin protection for general road riding/commuting?

I ride in a pair of these:

When I wear my leathers and these when I dont:

Never had a problem with them but then I try really hard not to fall off!

I will get a pair of bike boots at some point but at the moment the money gets tied up elsewhere.

I have a pair of Arlen Ness paddock boots that I normally only wear on my short commute
I've also worn my Magnum army patrol boots in an emergency, but usually only for short trips...

My bike boots of choice are Sidi Vertigos, and Sidi Black Rains, mainly because of the extra shin and ankle support

I'm too fond of my shins to be riding around in any of the above but better than trainers or loafers i guess Mr. Green

I love my boots, they're truly multipurpose. Look shoe-like for work when my trousers cover the top, I can go hillwalking in them, doesn't matter if it's wet or dry, and I can ride the bike in them.

Pretty pointless protection, If I came off I'd be worried about my ankle breaking and foot coming off. Alpinestar tech 3's all the way.

I had a lace catch in the side stand spring once, I'll never wear lace-ups on a bike again.
