I'm currently getting the bike ready for its MOT. I've replaced the number plate with a legal sized one and realised that the plate doesn't have a light (like it does on cars). Does the number plate need to be illuminated and will it fail the MOT if it isn't?

Hi

It should fail but it is one thing that is regularly over looked on MOT tests.

All the best

Should be lit, but the direct light from the bulb shouldn't be visible from behind. I had a similar problem just before my MOT for the 500. Cut a plant pot up, few holes, bitta paint, worked a treat!

Damn!

I've got a little cluster of LEDs which came with the bike when I bought it. Will slap them on tomorrow and see if it's any good.

I've just found a tick sheet that tester use at MOTs https://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/Motorcycle%20MOT%20Inspection%20Checklist%20(VT%2040M).pdf and I can't see anything about it needing to be illuminated although it does mention a 'rear reflector' which I also don't have.

Hi

Sorry, looks like I was wrong. Looking through the MOT rules it does seem to be mentioned for bikes (is for cars).

One is a requirement under the lighting regulations.

All the best

Keith

My brother's bike doesn't have a plate light, that passes.

No rear footrests either Thumbs Up
(As long as the rear seat is covered).
