I've had a Speed Triple for three years. Love it like my wife (some say more) but its time for a change.
I commute most days in London (12 miles each way) but I KNOW i'd be bored if I went for a midrange "do it all" type bike - I just rode the new CBRF - very nice and very competent (but see, I'm even describing it like that). Then I took out a new GSXR 750 and came back grinning like an idiot...
I want something that will get me into work and back without wrist pain or backache but I want to jump on something I fall in love with when I get out at weekends for a blast. What advice???

Having owned a GSXR 750 myself, I can attest to the grinning like an idiot. I can also attest to the blipping the throttle to overtake a car and being done for doing 86mph in a 40 as a consequence...all too easily done on something that accelerates faster than a cat sleeping beside a fog-horn.

The GSXRs, in my opinion, are awesome bikes - they're very sharp, but you do pay for it slightly with a more compressed riding position compared to the other equivalent sports bikes. If you're around 6ft or more, you probably won't want to ride it for long periods.

Buy a GSXR750 for having fun and a cheap hack to ride to work.

You'll probably pay for the hack in the savings you make in fuel, winter corrosion and and consumables (square tyres sir?) over the time you have it.

The only thing better than having a motorbike is having two motorbikes.

Get another test ride on the gsxr and this time do your daily commute route on it in town Razz
You'll be cursing your wrists and hug your speed triple when you get back.

CB1000r! I chopped my 954 in a few weeks ago for mine as my carpal tunnel was making it really unplesant to ride the blade. There is nothing not to like about the CB apart from that minging exhaust, which is soon sorted!

Mate you have answered it your self.... grinning like an idiot!! Gixer Every time. Go with your inner idiot EVERY TIME. Ive converted 4 mates to gixers ranging in height from 5,8 to 6,1 and all are grinning like idiots..

Especially if you can see your bike from work at any point. Instant boner in the office in the middle of the day! Very Happy

I would not gixer seek to gixer influence your gixer opinion and gixer thoughts on which gixer bike to gixer go for, gixer but I would suggest going gixer with your gixer heart. It takes gixer less muscles to smile so the gixer happy clappy gixer people say, so gixer you would be gixer saving on muscle strain gixer there to make gixer up for the occasional gixer sore wrist. After all gixer a really good wank or gixer shag can sometimes result in a sore cock for a gixer bit but it gixer doesnt stop you gixer shaggin again later does gixer it. Anyway, just a gixer impartial bit of advice from one gixer biker to another gixer biker! Good luck with the gixer which ever gixer you choose. Very Happy

Witty banter aside, its not the ideal commute, I agree, they eat tyres (relatively) not fuel efficient really. Will get you into trouble speed wise etc. That said, I would ride mine if I was commuting, for me the grinning outweighs the negative side so I def would gixer it, but then you might have got that from my previous post so I will go quietly... good luck with your choice anyway fella.

Now when you go to sleep to night what ever you do, your last thought must not be GSX-R ok? Got that, DO NOT THINK GSX-R .. Twisted Evil

I dont have the new GSXR750, on the 2000 Y model.

It covers every base for me, I commute on it, use it as my fun machine and have even gone off road Laughing

BUT

Petrol prices/short distances/price and rate it goes through tyres I've fixed up my old 125 to get on the road... I can start having that little extra money to pay certain people..

I'd grab the GSXR and something a bit tatty for the running around.

I don't know your budget but next year I will be in a similar position to you except I have a cheap cage to get me from A to B when I don't want to get wet and cold.

I would have one of these in my drive right now if I wasn't quite so sensible. At the moment (to me) it's not worth another 5k on top of my Street Triple R.

I found my GSXR1000 fine for commuting (a heavy helmet gave me an upper-back ache on my zx9, but I learnt that before I got the GSXR); so far haven't found anything better for getting through tight town-centre traffic quickly.
