Posted: 14:40 - 23 Jul 2011 Post subject: What is the difference between OEM and other Brake Discs? |
 |
|
My friend has a Yamaha YZF R125, and his back disc is apparently worn according to the garage and the pads went to the metal.
Anyway the back OEM disc brake is 170 quid, and he has looked at ebay and found some for 30 quid, and even 50.
I believe the metal wears out faster perhaps, but any other ideas?
I have seen EBC brake dics on weemoto for 70 quid, which is a better company I assume.
He asked me to ask on here. Thanks. ____________________ Hit the G spot. |

i've found oem parts are better in most cases but then again many manufacturers are lowering the quality making stuff in the same factories and charging the customer. When parts get expensive cgeck out a local engineers, they can skim discs if they are not too warped(don't mention that word?). ____________________ nearly a normal tax paying tosser.......with ferrileness suzi100,cg125,cb125scb100n,cb175,cd100,cj250t,kh250,c15,125 bantam, super 6,rickman gs750,xt500,250rs,dt175,lifan125,dolomite1850,metro,Morris220ld,morrisfg,leyland princess, range rover, corsa,vw camper .now struggling with legs. Hi
OEM stuff is normally a reasonable quality (early 1990s Yamaha floating disks apart).
Aftermarket ones are far more variable. Some really cheap and nasty stuff, some good stuff at a reasonable price and some very good stuff at prices that would make you cry.
I bought some Zone Products disks a few months back for the ZZR600. They seem to be working fine, although to be fair they do get a pretty easy life.
All the best

If your mate ends up buying a used disc off eBay, get him to ask the seller exactly how thick it is and make sure it's within the tollerances, (usualy stamped on the original disc - "4mm" etc), also, make sure it's not warped either. I'd stick with a Yamaha one, as mentioned above, the Quality of some EBC discs, leaves a lot to be desired and some of the "wavey" discs are utter shite. There should be plenty of good used discs out there. Some makers recommend renewing the disc bolts too, the old ones may be stuck in using loctite. In which case, just heat them up before undoing to release them. Make sure the surface of the wheel is completely clean before sticking the new disc on and torque down the bolts, (use the propper ones). Oh, and tell him to keep an eye on the condition of his pads in future and not to let them wear down the the steel ____________________ Space Is Deep |
