My friend has a Yamaha YZF R125, and his back disc is apparently worn according to the garage and the pads went to the metal.

Anyway the back OEM disc brake is 170 quid, and he has looked at ebay and found some for 30 quid, and even 50.

I believe the metal wears out faster perhaps, but any other ideas?

I have seen EBC brake dics on weemoto for 70 quid, which is a better company I assume.

He asked me to ask on here. Thanks.

OEM parts are always dearer than aftermarket, and not necessarily better quality. There are some iffy replacement discs out there from China and suchlike, stick with known brands like EBC and you'll get as good if not better quality than OEM at a cheaper price.

I've warped more EBC discs than standard ones so how do you come to the conclusion they are better quality?

I replaced the original front discs on my Africa Twin with EBC when the originals warped after 70k. The new discs suffered with extreme wet weather lag despite using the pads recommended by EBC and they rusted heavily after rain. I ended up using motocross brake pads to make them work in heavy rain.

On the other hand, the rear disc I replaced with an EBC (my old disc had done 120,000 miles and was a bit too thin to pass an MOT) worked really well and never rusted at all.

I've never had a problem with them, perhaps 5 or 6 bikes worth over a number of years. Using EBC pads as well none have ever been cause for concern usually better and never worse than the originals they replaced.

Hi

OEM stuff is normally a reasonable quality (early 1990s Yamaha floating disks apart).

Aftermarket ones are far more variable. Some really cheap and nasty stuff, some good stuff at a reasonable price and some very good stuff at prices that would make you cry.

I bought some Zone Products disks a few months back for the ZZR600. They seem to be working fine, although to be fair they do get a pretty easy life.

All the best

Keith
