At about 12 o'clock last night I was about to go to bed so was switching off the lights etc when I heard like an electrical fizzing noise. I could tell that it was coming from inside my dad's fish tank cabinet so I opened it up and and right in the back corner there were sparks and a small flame. At this point I was like 'oooh shit' then my little bro (17yrs) started shouting 'f-f-f-fire' like John Cleese Laughing I then went into headless chicken mode not knowing what to do, my dad was away on work and it was just me my brother and my mum. So I got the phone to call my dad and at the same time my brother shouts at me 'do something! throw water on it' I was like WTF! It's an electrical fire! Laughing The small flame was now a small fire and it was popping and fizzing then all of a sudden boom! all the electrics in the tank went off but luckily we managed to put out the fire with a towel.

This is what it looks like in the cabinet, a mess off electrics and pipes. The fire was on the right side right at the back so it was hard to get too. (the wires at the front were put there today temporarily)

and this is what it was

Shocked

After it was all out and everything was off I thought OK I can sort it in the morning but then my dad tells me that all the main pumps need to be switch back on otherwise everything will die Doh! I then spent the next hour and a half on phone trying to trace all the right wires in that mess! Needless to say he is going to sort that mess out and I'll force him to buy a small extinguisher. Lucky we hadn't all gone to sleep already Shocked

My Brool Story Co for the day Thumbs Up

Still don't know what caused it though as there was no water anywhere. Although a while back some water did fall on that plug so my dad thinks that it might have damaged it but decided to kill itself yesterday!

Looks like there was no "Drip loop" in the cable - happened to my tank once!

If it wasn't wet then more than likely a loose connection. Lucky escape either way, are your socket circuits not RCD protected?

It's a device that automatically disconnects the electrical supply if a fault develops, very efficient.

What was that plug for? That was a huge amount of power being pulled through that to do that

My thoughts too.

Either:

- It had a loose connection or
- Something short-circuited in whatever it was connected to and caused it to draw a lot of current.

Can you post some pics of the inside of the plug?
