I had the bike up on the paddock stand cleaning and lubing the chain this afternoon. I fitted a loobman (cheapskate scottoiler), switched the ignition on and put the bike in 1st gear so I could see how well the chain luber was. I noticed the chain seemed to be rattling a lot and the lower half of the chain was wobbling up and down quite a bit too. I've tried to get a vid of:

I took the centre sprocket cover off to see if there was anything in there causing it and the motion looks smooth. I've tried to look down the length of the chain and the only thing I can see is a plastic moulded part (chain guide?) which the chain seems to rub on quite a bit. It's grooved too - should it be grooved or has this groove been caused by the chain wearing into it?

The chain isn't slack - I adjusted the tension a fortnight ago.

Is it normal for it to make a noise like this? I don't normally notice it as the engine and exhaust are pretty loud - I've had to put the baffle back in to make sure it passes MOT next week so she's a bit quieter that normal.

Your chain has some tight spots.

If you rotate the wheel slowly by hand and test the tension you will notice it get slacker and tighter.

as above. its usual to have on tight spot but if yours has more then it may be causing some odd movement etc. when was the chain last changed ? might be worth getting a new one

This looks fairly normal as mentioned above the Vtwin is quite a lumpy power delivery and in normal use it won't be running without a degree of load even if only maintaining speed against wind resistance.
I suppose you could simulate a resistance by lightly holding the rear brake on.

The chain's probably got 8-10k on it although the previous owner had it off the road last winter so there was a bit of 'winter rusting'. I'd expect it to be halfway through its life now.

Obviously everybody advises that you should change sprockets when doing a chain change but my sprockets seem to be in near perfect condition. I can't see any wear on them. Could I get away with just getting a chain or is that tempting fate? Chain on its own = £40, Chain and Sprocket kit = £80.

If the sprockets look good I don't see why not.
Depends to some extent on your future plans.
It will wear the new chain a bit quicker without perfectly matching new sprockets but if you might change the bike anyway before long it won't bother you much.
It won't induce a disasterous failure.
