Having spent a couple of years rebuilding my old bike it's not far off MOT time now but during that time i swapped the engine for one that i've rebuilt. This means of course the engine number is different to the one on the V5 so i obviously need to notify DVLA.

Having looked at their website it talks about providing proof when returning the V5 with new details.

Has anyone else done this and what seems to be acceptable proof for them? The problem i have for giving proof of purchase is that i bought the engine off ebay in a job lot of bits ages ago, i don't have the receipt for that still but in any case it didn't specifically mention the engine anyway.

Would a letter of inspection from a garage suffice perhaps?

Just confirmation from a garage "should" be fine. If you know then you could get them to say they supplied and fitted.

That said.. I swapped the engine on my CLR125 more than once.. never had trouble with just sending the form off.

Sometimes it goes straight through other times they get arsey and want proof, just send it off with a covering letter as to how long you've had the engine, lost the receipt etc etc and see what happens. Depends how "friendly" your garage is as to whether they will back you up saying they sold it etc, inspecting/fitting it is not really what they're after.

You will need either:
1. A receipt on headed note paper (so they can check). The receipt must contain the following information- Exact engine size ( you can't put 900 when its 901) the engine number and the fuel type.

2. A bike shops engineers report

3. AA/RAC vehicle inspector's report.

I know this cause i did it last year myself, and if you don't send the right shit they will just send it you back!
