Bit dissapointing...

After putting the bike back together after the cleaning of the tank, i fitted the new inline filter, put the carb back together (after thoroughly cleaning all of it with compressed air and solvents) and i'm having problems starting the bike. Confused

Before the cleaning of the tank, the bike was experiencing problems leaking fuel from the carb bath overflow. This was possibly due to the floats being at an incorrect height.
When re-assembling the carb i looked over the details in the service manual, which explained the floats (with carb turned over) should sit at a height of 23.3mm +/- 1.0 from the gasket face. On inspection they were a little high. Somewhere close to 30mm.
So i carefully bent the tongue in the middle of the two floats, adjusting them so they come down to the recommended height.

I re-assembled the carb and switched on the fuel tap, after a kick or two she wanted to go, but in the end didnt, and decided to leak fuel. This time it's worse than before. Sad
How is this possijavascript:emoticon('Thumbs Up')ble if the service manual gives me the height and i set it more or less where the needle valve needs to be? (which is in really good condition by the looks) I know it's not a very accurate measurement but at least it isn't near on 30mm.

As i understand it the fuel will leak out of this overflow if the level becomes to great...does this mean then that the needle valve isn't seated correctly when there is an amount of fuel in there??
I'm kinda stuck now. I only know so much about carbs but don't want to give up.

Thanks Thumbs Up

You know when you turn the screw on the bottom of the carb to drain the float bowl? Where the fuel comes out is a little spout. Stick a bit of clear pipe on this and bend it in a U shape and undo the drain screw. The liquid will rise in the tube to the level it is in the float bowl.

Also watch out for air locks, flooding, kinks in hoses etc. I've known people chase complicated and highly specific problems only to find out it was something annoyingly simple Wink

How would i know if there was an air lock, or how do i locate it?

If i do attach a hose to the float bowl and see the level, how can i make an accurate judgement on how to adjust the float height?

I couldn't find anywhere for the setting of the choke assembly, it looks ok to me but had no visual or text to go by. Maybe i had missed the chapter Confused
Thanks for the input Thumbs Up

Yeah seems fine, the float needle looks new actually. No pitting.

should of left the float height setting alone then?

Probably why its off spec, and it works better being off spec? Just a thought

You are using fresh petrol I hope? My GP100 wouldn't go with any amount of shit/water in it.

+1

Bound to be a borked needle/seat. Check the needle itself-the tip should be smooth and should not have any ridges. When they wear they develop a shoulder and will stop sealing.

Setting the height to 30mm was probably a bodge by a previous owner to try and get the tired float needle to seal.

Don't piss around with the float height as you won't achieve anything when the above is knackered. Float needles and their seats are service items that need to be replaced periodically.

Pepperami the bodger would blow like buggery through the fuel overflow pipe to see if any bogies needed blowing out and to help it settle down?
I`ve done this many times to good effect.... dont ask why it worked for me but it just did, for example after taking the carb to bits a dozen times on that stupid Sachs XTC125 I`m rebuilding, I blew it through and it seems to have settled down at last,I think? maybe? possibly? I hope Thumbs Up
It`s GP100 Thumbs Up when did they stop making them? you`re bound to have a few problems Thumbs Up
