Crank on the MTB is buggered after the trip to Cannock earlier this week, basically the threads for the pedals on the crank have worn off (due to loose pedals and cross threading). Was wondering how to go about fixing this. Will it be easier to change the entire crank or attempt to fix the existing one? If i rethread the existing crank, that will mean the hole is bigger so the pedals wont fit anyway?

I attempted to remove the crank earlier but have no idea how it comes off. I removed the two outer bolts of the crank arms but this didnt appear to do anything at all except to show me another hole and some sort of square bolt hole? How would i go about removing the crank and what tools will i need?

Heres some pictures to show what im on about.

Any help would be massively appreciated.

Thanks.

The pedals are Taper fitting onto the crank and may need a bit of Gentle hitting with a hammer to remove.

Once the chain side is off there should be a ring nut and then a threaded bolt into frame, those are to remove the crank, bearings will roll everywhere though.

You need a crank removal tool - bit like a hub puller.

It threads into the crank arm, and then you screw the 'plunger' through the middle which pushes into the bottom bracket stub and then the crank arms come off.

Same for both sides.

You're not taking the bottom bracket off so there will be no bearings going everywhere.

Thanks for the tips. Hammer doesnt work so will buy the puller. Glad its only 36 to be honest having owned pushbikes for about 20 years ive never had to use one so glad it doesnt cost much.

Thanks.
