Just coming to that time of having to replace the gear oil on the NSR (well, its just after the Honda recommended time) and want to know which oil to buy......

The guy at Halfords (who has a bike) said to use 4-stroke oil, which does meet the Honda standard for the NSR. He says its better than car oil as car oil contains additives that are no good for bikes.

Keith?

Cheers
Mark

Halfrauds should sell specific gear box oil for bikes (I know the one here has gear oil).

But yeah car oil isn't the stuff to be using really, however if it meets the standards in theory it should be fine but it will have been designed for a different usage etc.

10-40 car oil is fine.

In fact I believe its recommended. Proper gear oil will give better protection and last longer, but protection isn't that important, as NSRs rarely do more than 30k and you'd need to do 100k for it to matter.

Proper gear oil is thicker, heavier oil and will cause more clutch drag from cold.

I'd go with plain 10-40 and change it when the gearchange goes off.

There's no point skimping on oil for the sake of a few quid. You don't have to get the best motorcycle gearbox oil you can find, but I would definately get oil specifically for the job
