I have a 1999 naked bandit 600. There is some rattling sort of noises in the engine and I think this is pointing to my valve clearances being too 'loose'ly adjusted, its about time for a check on them anyway.

The haynes manual refers to a new gasket being needed for the 'pulse generator coil assembly', I think I can avoid this by just using the rear wheel to rotate the engine instead of the bit under that cover.
It also refers to O rings on some oil hoses which must be removed when removing the valve cover.
How important is it that these are discarded and replaced, the haynes uses the word 'must' and I want to believe it more than I normally do since I am fiddling with important engine parts.
Just looking for some opinion on whether I really need new parts to do my valve clearances.

Just a note it uses 'adjuster screws' rather than shims althoug not really relevant to the question.

Thanks in advance.
Chris

From memory, you don't need anything. The rubber gasket that goes around the valve cover may be a bit manky, but should still be serviceable. About the only prep work that's required is to take the tank off, purely for access purposes. Don't forget that valve clearances should be done cold, too.
The fact that they're locknut tappets does make life significantly easier.

I've done a few and never replaced an oil line O ring....but I have had leaking covers gaskets and the "mickey mouse" sparkplug tunnel gaskets a few times. Get the rocker cover gasket and the mickey mouse before you start. If you've got them you wont need them but at least they're there for next time. If you don't get them then Sods Law says you WILL need them.
Do yourself a favour and get the Suzuki tappet tool as well, costs less than a fiver and saves a lot of fiddling with pliers and suchlike it's part no 09917-14920.

Finally Bandit tappets are noisy to a point it's when they close up and become quiet you have to worry, best description I've heard for healthy ones is they sound like a load of mice using typewriters Very Happy

Just replace any O-rings and Gaskets that are buggered, O-rings for the oil line pipes cost me coppers from a plumbing firm I know.

Did my headgasket about 3 week ago and didn't replace the pulse coil cover gasket with no problems, mind when taking it off a bit of oil is sometimes in so have a rag handy.

You already have the Haynes so no worries for clearances Thumbs Up , just check that the cam chain isn't lose whilst you've got the rocker cover off as that could cause some rattling, spanner and pliers worked fine for me on the clearances btw.

And mind the cover where the crank breather pipe goes into if you take it off, mine was a right bastard to get back on in the frame ( sods law it was the last and most difficult effing thing to do after the headgasket and valve clearances Rolling Eyes )
