Hi Chaps,

I bought a 'Bike-It' Heavy Duty Chain Tool sealed from a dealer but it didn't come with any instructions and neither can supply any which i'm a but annoyed about but they have been helpful so i'm nearly finished it.

They say that the cap/anvil attached in pic 2 creates the flare but i wanted to know how wether there is a torque measurement i can apply to the tool to get it just right ? i'm also aware of the measurements DID give on the flare so i presume its just a case of measuring this distance until it meets this figure?

I've included some pics of the label inside the box detailing its contents and the tool.
Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated as i've never done this before although i do have another 2 spare rivet links incase i screw up.
thank you all
sparky

IIRC the last chain I fitted (a DID one) has set distances between the two plates (inner and outer) on the master link. If you gently tighten the chain tool until it reaches this point, you should be good to go. Make sure it rounds off the pins on the master link - you don't want them working loose.

Don't overdo it, and make sure the link moves smoothly. If you completely fudge it up, use a new master link.

I used vernier calipers to check the distance between the plates, and tightened the chain tool a little bit at a time, checking as I went along until it was spot on.

I also completely chuffed up the first master link I fitted, and bought a new one from Wemoto. Mr. Green

As long as you have a peen over on the link heads it will be fine. The side link is clamped into place the first time you apply power to the back wheel. The only way side plates fail is if the chain alignment is so far out that the sproket teeth are forced against the side links. I've never seen a chain snapped at the master link. (But I suppose that there is always a first time).

Remember this is only for 'hollow' rivets.
Try and use it on a solid rivet and bad things happen!
