Going to get swingarm and cushion lever on my GS500 powder coated and obviously will need a bike shop to remove all bearings and re-fit new ones after paint.
Theres 3 in the lever and 4 in the arm so how much should i expect to pay without being taken for a ride.
They obviously use a press which i assume would be uneconomical for me to buy but i just want to know how long that should take them cos for just 2 bearing removed and new reinstalled they quoted me £30 quid.
Any advice given appreciated

Sounds like they are possibly just charging you an hours labour, it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes I'd have thought. I would get them out myself, and I would suppose at least try a drill press as a DIY jobby. But not an ideal tool for the job. Just get a long bar to drive old ones out I'd have assumed? Saves some time at the shop atleast. Its not bank breaking though.

Hi

Does that price include the new bearings? Suspension linkage bearings tend to be expensive from the bike makers (and sometimes difficult to get a generic matching bearing).

Also by cushion lever I presume you mean the linkage. Normally these are alloy and if so I would be tempted to suggest just cleaning it up (not polishing it).

All the best

Keith

£30 plus the cost of bearings which are about 15 dollars per bearing.yes for two bearings extracted and new inserted they want £30.
The cushion lever is the linkage or knuckle which from new is painted black but has all rusted on mine so I want it sandblasted and then powedercoated black again.
So how much should I be looking to pay reasonably for all bearings to be replaced excluding the parts?

Hi

Probably a bit much, but sounds like they are charging about half an hours labour. Probably reasonable given that they are taking a risk that it something will go wrong.

Cheats way of doing it would be to use a vice and various size sockets to push the bearings out / provide a space for the bearings to be pushing into.

All the best

Keith

I can get a 10 ton sealer press for £150 do you think it's something easy enough for the home mechanic to do themselves?

Something like the press above should do it do you think?

Hi

Should do it. Bigger problem is spacers to push the bearings in / out (and any bike shop with have an accumulation of suitable rubbish).

All the best
