Hi All,

Does anyone know the current state of the law regarding buying a bike that wasn't SORN-ed by the previous owner?

Here's the story. About ten days ago I bought a YBR125 that had been unused for some time by it's previous owner. I dropped it into my local shop for an MOT and a look over, then went away for a short break (WOMAD festival - awesome!). Came home, to find a V5 on the doormat, and a freshly MOT'd and insured bike. Applied for new tax online and during the process got a statement telling me saying that the bike wasn't SORN-ed and I was guilty of an offence.

As I'm the new keeper, should I be worried, or expecting nasty letters from DVLA shortly?

Cheers, Mike.

Ive just got a new bike, i called dvla as i was unsure about the new rules. They said that untill the v5 comes in your name then its not your responsibilty to sorn it or insure it??

if give em a call and see what they say but id say dont worry. Just make sure if its taxed get it insured.

Hi

One of the little tricks the DVLA have to maximise revenue is that when you transfer ownership it cancels any existing SORN declaration on it. Hence you have to redeclare SORN.

All the best

Hi

Just go to the online tax disk site and redeclare SORN.

All a load of hassle for an utterly pointless system.

All the best

I received a tax it or SORN it form (V11?) from DVLA for my 400.I took it down to my local Post Office who stamped the form and gave me a receipt after scanning the bar code on the form.As far as I was concerned I had done what was required.

Some time later I received a letter from the DVLA enforcement office saying that I must pay a fine as I had not taxed or SORNed my vehicle.I wrote back to them with a polite letter saying that I had SORNed it and here are the photocopies of all of the relevant documentation. This was sent using a silver envelope, which is registered and next day delivery.Again, the enforcement office wrote back saying that they had not received the SORN and that I must pay the fine.I replied again by letter stating that any payment of a fine would be an admittance of my wrong doing and that I was refusing to pay.Sometime later I had another letter from DVLA saying that if I did not pay I could end up in court with a CCJ,bad credit rating and all of that rigmarole.I have ignored this threat and heard nothing. This was last year.

DVLA have on their paperwork a badge of excellence.I wonder who gave them this?
