Thanks - Just passed Mod 1

Just got back from my first Mod1, and got a pass!

Didn't have any lessons, but put the hours in at the local car park (theres a full size Mod 1 course marked out in chalk in the local Sainsburys if anyone wants it !!!).

Got a couple of minors, it had been raining and I got a little rear lock up on the emergency stop, and then only 47kph on the first avoidance swerve, but then 52 on the second try.

Really pleased as thought I might have failed on the rear lock up. So on to Mod 2 now....

I was just going to go for Mod2 also without lessons but after speaking to the examiner he said he would always suggest lessons beforehand, so I'm a bit undecided now

Anyway, thanks for all the tips and advice from you all, it is very much appreciated.

Grats on the pass. if the examiner recommends a lesson or 2 I should take that advice. They wont be gaining anything from you taking lessons with an external company. Remember these guys are, for the most part, bikers themselves and they want you to pass. Chances are they are as pissed off as the rest of us about these new laws coming in (I know my test examiner was) and will want you to pass sooner rather than later.

Congrats on Mod 1 bud, I would go for a lesson or to just for peace of mind, these guys will pick up/iron out any issues you may ( or not ) have, thats my tuppence worth anyway, good luck on Mod 2, and let us know,

Agree that if the examiner suggests a lesson or two that it's worth looking into it.

On the lock up. I was told by my instructor that if you start to lock the rear wheel but IMMEDIATELY correct it before you come to a stop, that it is still a pass, but that you get a minor for it. Basically you get 'brownie points' as it were for correcting the mistake before it develops into something serious or potentially dangerous.

That said, I think it also depends on the examiner PLUS how well you do in general. If for example, you came off as quite comfortable and confident, then they may have taken that into account when you locked the wheel. If however you were very nervous or unsteady, then they might have chosen to fail you for that lock.

Important part is, you did it!

I've been here over a month now and still am not sure what a wheel lockup is or how it happens

Well, on the spur of the moment I've just booked Mod2 for 9/3 so I might just go for it, as I feel quite confident. Having said that its far enough away for me to squeeze in a refresher lesson if I need it.

I'm not trying to be cocky at all but I feel pretty confident on the road and have been riding a scooter on the road for about 6 years prior to getting a 'proper' bike, with grown-ups gears

My recent CBT reminded me of the routine for life-savers etc so I am leaning towards just trying it without, but time will tell!

congrats on the mod1 pass.I would go with what the examiner said and take a few lessons before hand.He probably spotted a few areas which you could improve on to get a mod 2 pass.I had the same to improve my slow speed riding.
