I just moved house, and did the DVLA online change of address thing, which told me to destroy the old licence and send it back to Swansea. So now I have neither the photocard nor the counterpart.

Can I still ride without the physical licence? What happens if I get stopped and told to produce the license within 7 days, but it takes longer than that for DVLA to get the new licence sent out?

Yes you can ride without the license.

Tell the policeman its at the DVLA when he gives you the producer, its the only excuse for not taking it to a station, but you must take it as soon as it arrives from the DVLA - otherwise the offenses start mounting up.

Do a search for CaNsA's cautionary post on this.

I've photocopied mine on a machine that timestamps the copy...

But I really don't fancy my chances of it, or my 3 v5s coming back unscathed.

*crosses everything*

Confused

Never, ever, ever surrender your license. Always "lose" it. I have at least 3 copies now.

£20 a time for replacing a lost license, free to photocopy it.

It's also free to photoshop a photocopy, which is what the DVLA would claim you have done if they lost your motorcycle entitlement.

If you can get the copy signed at the police station to state that the copy is accurate and genuine it would be better but losing the licence is the most secure way to insuring against DVLA fuckups.

I'm happy I've got the license covered, one way and another.

Tbh, I'm more worried about the v5s. Rumours abound of their not dealing well with multiples. Confused

After the Speed Awareness Course I'm going to ask DVLA to remove 33bhp restriction from mine. But I'm going to keep the old one just in case. I don't trust them.

Thanks everyone. Thumbs Up It's a bit late to "lose" my license now, but I might hang onto it until the new one turns up just in case.

Given the DVLA have refused to accept police records of a police motorcyclists full licence as proof that they have made a mistake and removed their bike licence I would suspect a mere signed photocopy would be ignored.

All the best

Ok, so... rather embarrassingly, there I was collecting up all the bits to send off on Saturday and can I find my counterpart anywhere?

Can I fuck.

Embarassed Laughing

Lost license it is, then.

Imagine me facepalming quietly right about now. Embarassed

Is this happening yet???

TLDR - DVLA agreed to send back the old licence with the new one so that people can prove they had the entitlements if they were missing.

Hmmm, just read it again, seems you must supply the stamped addressed envelope, which they will just lose along with losing your old licence and forgetting to send anything.

Hi

Think a few people on here have done this to get their old licence back. Personally sounds rather safer to have just "lost" the old licence though.

The chances of the DVLA making a mistake on any particular transaction is probably not that high, but it does happen and Murpheys law will mean it will happen when they have also lost the original licence.

All the best

Keith

What about a FOI request, before sending your licence anywhere?

If correctly worded (someone needs to try it and tell us what works Wink ) the DVLA can be forced to tell you what entitlements you have on your driving licence, which they will be reading from the database Very Happy

As the charge is a maximum of £10, it's cheaper than "losing" the licence...

I changed my address on my licence online and put my old licence in an envelope ready to post.

Got my new licence through and the envelope was still sitting on the table. oops

Never heard anything from the DVLA regarding the old licence. I have a gut feeling that the postcode used for destroyed licences just get thrown away, not even checked of on the database as returned.

'Subject Access Request', as per the DPA. FOI specifically excludes personal data.

But I like the idea!
