I have a Datatool Veto Plus that was fitted to my CBR600F in 1999. The bike was laid up in a garage from 2006 until earlier this year. During that time the battery was allowed to run completely flat.

I bought and fitted a new battery for the bike as well as a new 9v rechargeable battery for the alarm backup supply. At the time I fitted the batteries the bike’s indicators were disconnected

Now if the alarm is armed, either automatically or via the fob, it will go off after a few seconds, but the alarm no longer flashes the indicators. I suspect that the indicator thing may be a critical clue. For a while the alarm stopped making any noise, but the speaker suddenly started working again on Friday morning. This prompted me to look into getting it working. It didn’t bother me when it was quiet, but the infernal beeping in “valet mode” shouts “steal me, the alarm’s off!!” to anyone familiar with the devices.

The manual suggests checking the in-line fuse if the indicators stop working which I eventually found under the tank and it tests fine. Some sources on the internet suggest completely draining the system of power to reset it. So last night I disconnected the backup battery, removed the in-line fuse and, for good measure, disconnected the bike battery negative.

This morning I reconnected everything and the symptoms persist. Alarm still goes off and the indicators still not flashing.

Any ideas for what else I can check? Cheers.

afaik

when you disarm it , it will emit a number of bleeps, this number of bleeps will indicate which circuit has been triggered causing it to go off, probably the seat switch, try bypassing the fecker

No such sophistication on mine I’m afraid. This is the old Veto, not the more recent Veto Evo. Two beeps when arming, one beep when disarming. There’s no seat switch either.

Last night I stripped it all down again, just in case it is “spiked”. I pulled out the internal 9v battery and the in-line fuse. I removed the PCB from the main unit which was quite tough because although the wire connectors are removable there was black sealant gluing them to the PCB.

The instructions on the Datatool site are for the Veto Evo, but it’s as close as I’m going to get.

Datatool Support wrote:
With the bikes battery still in place and fully charged.

1. Plug PCB onto loom and reinstall.
2. Replace In-Line fuse.
3. The alarm will sound for a period of approx. 30 seconds.
4. Allow the system to reset itself.
5. Replace internal battery onto PCB.
6. Make sure all connections are complete.
7. Re-Align the remote – Press and hold both buttons for a period of 5 seconds,
then press the circle button.

If this doesn’t work I’ll have to assume a faulty PCB and just unplug the speaker and put it back in valet mode.

I asked Datatool for suggestions via their “contact us” form and a techie gave me a call back within an hour or two.

He said that early Veto models suffered from failing indicator relays so that may explain the lack of indicator flashing. There are three mini relays on the PCB. Two appear to be working fine and click as the ignition is switched on and off. I guess the third should be clicking when indicator activity is supposed to happen, but remains silent.

I wonder if it’s worth sourcing new relays and replace the parts? They are Siemens relays with part numbers (as far as I can tell because the text is a bit smudged):

V23072-C1061-A307
V23072-C1061-A308
V23072-C1061-A408

I had a snoop around Google, but couldn’t find those exact parts. No idea how difficult it would be to de solder and replace the parts.

The Datatool techie also suggested unwrapping all the splice points on the loom to check for corrosion. Yeah right. If I get to that point I’ll be doing it to remove the alarm. He said that a failed relay wouldn’t account for the alarm instantly activating whenever armed.

Do I bother trying to fix it or just leave it in workshop\valet mode with the speaker disconnected?
