Passed My DAS, now dilema

Well i'v finally done it, passed my MOD 1 on Monday with 1 minor (could have pulled up sooner on the controlled stop) and then passed my MOD 2 yesterday afternoon with 4 minors (nerves got the better of me and a made a few silly mistakes)

Now to find myself a big bike, but i'm in a bit of a quandary at the moment, as i could do with selling my CG125 to help fund the big bike, but on the other hand i don't want to cancel my insurance 6 months into my first year as i will have to start all over again regards NCD

My only real option to not lose any NCD would be to use all my savings (£1500) to buy a Hornet/Bandit/Fazer, swap the insurance over, then try and sell my CG

Unless anyone has any better ideas?

First thing to check is if your insurance company will let you change over to a big bike - some will, some use underwriters that specialise in 125s.
That may affect your timings (if they won't let you change, then you could have both bikes on the road whilst you sell the 125 - funds permitting - or stick on the 125 until the end of the year).

Regardless, selling a CG privately shouldn't be hard as long as you are realistic on price vs condition. If you can be without the bike for a while you can put it up for sale now and not worry about your next bike until it is gone - to be safe from being liable for any accidents your CG is involved post-sale in you should really pause your insurance at that point, which may well incur additional admin charges.

Or for ease (though not the best deal) you could trade it in at a dealer so everything happens at the same time and you aren't dealing with chancers (other than the dealer themselves). I've do it both ways - sometimes the dealer way can work out better as long as you go into it for convenience and looking at the overall cost of the deal and not for "peace of mind".

Never knew it was possible to pause insurance, certainly something i will enquire about (and being able to change to a bike bike policy)

I'm insured through Bennets, but don't know which underwriter my policy is with, or if they offer such options as to pause insurance

The other dilemma is whether to wait a bit longer till towards the end of the year when i guess bike prices go down, before i buy a big bike, as it won't be my only mode of transport

Yeah, i have plenty of searches out there with email alerts for the sort of bikes i am after, but i'm not just going to rush into buying the first one i see within reach and budget, was more thinking if i take my time they will start to get cheaper the closer we get to Winter

I took the Loser plates off my 125 last night, but didn't actually want to take it out after spending the last few weeks on a 600 Fazer, actually not used the 125 since starting my DAS as the first time i hopped on it after a lesson, it felt like a backwards step

Sure, no need to rush at it. But you might be disappointed by the reduced choice available over winter. You want the best bike in your budget rather than the cheapest heap that someone is desperate to offload.

Also its summer now so go out and get a big bike and get on the roads! Winter is crap unless you intend to commute in which case you don't have a choice

That remaining 6 months will be a long time, especially as you've had a taste of big bikes. I'd look at switching the policy over (if it's possible), and getting a big bike personally. As above selling the CG shouldn't be an issue.

Insurance for 600cc without NCD is going to be expensive.

I kept my 125cc for over a year after passing my test. My test back then was A2 restricted to 33bhp for 2 years so i didn't mind to wait. The bike was Aprilia RS125, so I was not bored of it.

Then buying insurance for a 600cc bike with years of NCD didn't hit me that hard. Having NCDs and not having them make a huge difference in price.

When I cancelled the insurance on a 125 I'd had for a month and started it on a Hornet I received a refund of £10 (Hornet insurance was £105).

Edit: This was less than a week after my test.

Yes i am indeed and oldie (well not that old, but certainly not young)

I actually did an online quote for a Hornet 600 earlier and it came out at £260 fully comp with zero NCD, i think i paid something like £150 for the CG125 TPF&T, i can live with that

Just been through it myself
Ended up with a Yamaha xj6
Cost me 306 to insure with NCD and breakdown cover and also no car insurance history for last 8 years

Thanks for the advice everyone, and after a weekend of bike viewings i have put a deposit down on a 2003 Honda CB600F S Hornet, won't be picking it up for a couple of weeks as i need to wait till payday....... going to be the longest 2 weeks of my life

I would have preferred the fully naked version, but this one caught my eye as being in very good nick, low mileage (15,000) and from a local dealer with a 3 month AA warranty, it was hard to turn it down
