See posts passim.

The initial ones just say "you must insure or SORN", no mention of penalty notices, fines, or the actual legislation. I think I'll sit on these ones for a while and see what transpires.

Can anyone find the actual legislation? I've yet to see it in black and white.

They can't "fine" you at all. All they can do is to send you a demand for payment or else they'll prosecute / pass the case to the CPS or Procurator Fiscal. In other words, they can ask for a bribe and that's about it.

If you park it on a plinth in your garden won't it become a work of art ?

Section 22 Road Safety Act 2006
22. Offence of keeping vehicle which does not meet insurance requirements

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2006/49/pdfs/ukpga_20060049_en.pdf

It is an ammendment to the Road Traffic Act 1988, and not itself an actual instrument.

Have a look here: https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=219507&highlight=sorn

Basically, you can't keep a bike TAXed and have no insurance for it. It's supposed to keep uninsured drivers off the road but all it's going to end up doing is p*ss people off.

Yup, it's utterly pointless. It's already an offence (and much worse morally) to drive/ride without insurance, you'll already be caught by any ANPR camera or Plod-check, and this does exactly nothing to stop uninsured vehicles getting on the road. If you were going to drive/ride uninsured, you'll just SORN then do it anyway.
