Hi guys does anyone remember the 70s sports mopeds such as mine garelli tiger cross which could do about 60mph and also fantic motor chopper which i think did about 50mph although a bit hairy on corners, them days were great because now the lads and lasses have to put up with them silly rules of being retricted to 30mph and which a police biker said to me they are dangerous and should be able to keep up with the traffic,i rode mine in them days with no accidents because you could keep up. This is a full stop: . It is useful when your sentence gets too long so you can create a new sentence.

OP....you'll have to ignore the gods that are marjay and bluex5. If there is something minute to have a go at then they will.

Perhaps its to cover insecurities, I'm just speculating though.

Think i'll leave this with no full stop and watch the sad fuckers salivate about something else to moan at Laughing

I remember when you could ride unrestricted bikes/scooters, I also think that you are wearing rose tinted glasses.
There was not the protective gear that we have now, and due to people been able to buy a bike/scooter and go on the road without any training. That was a recipe for disaster.

Ok, in all seriousness, I'd like to see a detailed post on these sports mopeds, with pictures and everything. I wasn't around during that phase of biking history, and I don't know much about it. Of course I've heard of FS1E's and stuff like that, but it would be great for someone to write something nice about Garrellis, Fantics and the like. I want to know what the cool kids were riding in the 1970s if they didn't have Fizzies.

Just putting a very long sentence asking if anyone remembers them isn't really the kind of thing that adds to the richness of the forum. To be fair though, I could have been a lot harsher to him! Wink

If someone wants to write about 70's sports mopeds and put up pictures and everything then that would be cool. As long as its readable of course!

So if you're genuinely interested why not ask genuine questions?

Is that too easy compared to giving an off topic smarmy smug reply to a new member?

People like you say the forum has gone down hill and blame it all on the scummers like me, look in the mirror fella. Grow up.

I think I just did. I don't know ANYTHING about these bikes apart from Fantic and Garrelli made some.

theguvnor wrote:

Maybe because I have been there and done that. I've written a number of little article-ettes for this forum (if that is even a word?) and spent a lot of time doing it. I've exhausted the topics I can talk about (without being ripped to pieces anyway) and so I'd like to see some more write-ups of different types of bike. Alas, I'm not sure the OP in this thread is up to it, being he just blasted out what he wanted to say in one long sentence.

Negative. The forum has gone downhill because people like me used to put in the effort to make it an interesting place, but none of the n00bs do the same (OK except maybe Teflon-Mike), despite having indepth knowledge of subjects that I/we know nothing about. Plus anything I write these days seems to get ripped apart by the likes of you and Relentless, so what is the point? I've done plenty of 'Show and Tells' I've done a few workshop threads and even a buyers guide for 400cc sportsbikes. What have you done?

If you want the forum to be the utopian place it once was why don't YOU write something about bikes that is close to your heart. Put pictures in and everything, and stick it in the show and tell section. Then maybe the forum will have some of its old charm back.

Meanwhile I'm going to continue ripping into people for not constructing readable sentences.

But as to the 50s even though i would derestrict one if i had one now they are safer in build and with no points to adjust and no mixing the two stroke oil a lot cleaner, only the plugs to worry about and even indicaters and a brake light, you was lucky if the lights came on in them old italian bikes. Laughing Thumbs Up

Been there? done that? or read a book about it? So if thats the case why not encourage rather than be smarmy?

So start doing it again then instead of whining about it.

Spent some time being a prick when younger, then sat back, read and learned, still reading and still learning. While you were moaning at the OP I was hearing bike names that I've never heard of which will see me BCF searching and googling. What I do might not be useful to you, but it is to me.

From what they say in CMM the SS50 was the 'sensible' option, being a four stroke and what have you.

My guess is that Fantics and Garrellis were quick but unreliable. I be they looked good too though!

I prefer it the way it is now, where you need to do a CBT before going on the road. I do think that 50cc bikes/scooter should be able to do 50 mph, that would be more useful and I think it would be safer for road use. When I was 16 / 17 I took risks that I wouldn't take now. You say police state, but I think something needed to be done, you could go to a shop and buy a 250cc bike put L's on it and ride it home. Because of all the accident that is why they restricted new riders to 125's. But still their was lots of accidents, so they decided to implement the CBT (and I have to agree that it has helped). Their are alot more bikes/scooters on the road now then their was when i was 17, so their will be more accident but I bet the percentage is lower.

I see the scoot boys riding around like cocks while wearing hoodies and the only protective gear is a lid. I do think they are an accident waiting to happen.

hi pax you are right in saying them cocks riding around in hoodies but that is now with all the training in the world you will still get the odd few that spoil it for others,i do think that you do need some training as my dad and brother inlaw taught me to ride my garelli and like you say it looked the business with that yellow and black tank and the exhaust in chrome, took a bit of polishing did that, and as to getting a 250 with L plates some did come a cropper.
Although i think there were more people killed crossing the road and i survived it and so did many more you did get more sensible as you went along.
I did remember an old man shaking his fist at us on a sunday afternoon as you could hear a Garrelli and fantic chopper from miles away what a great sound they made.

My first road bike was a Suzuki gp100 Razz

I had a mate with a Yamaha RD 125 lc, that was the best 125 of its time. It was a speed machine when unrestricted (which it was) Wink

I wanted a garelli (although i was 16 like two years ago not in the 70's)

I ended up with this bad boy

https://i979.photobucket.com/albums/ae271/RxsOllie/RIMG0855.jpg

4.8 horsepower of pure sex

Turned me into a man.

I had the exact same fizzy as above when I was 16 3 years ago.
Did about 45 on the flat and yea autolube.
Was great fun to ride except the brakes were absolutely appalling. Back brake was better than the front.
I found a way to give it a boost by turning the fuel off. Shocked
Eventually the top end seized. Cost £45 quid for a brand new pattern top end.

When I were a lad everyone had a sports moped. Well, everyone into bikes who was 16 anyway Laughing

Not many did a genuine 60. My mate had a Fizzy that was tuned to utter buggery and that just about managed it, downhill with a following wind.

I used to dream of getting my hands on one of those Honda race twins of the 60s. 14 gears, 20-odd horsepower and top speed of something insane like about 125mph Laughing
