Just a quick one. My forks look crap, too many winters with salt and crud has taken their toll.
I was thinking of using Hammerite to respray, but what is the best way to prepare the forks. I'm going to leave them in situ, but obviously taking everything else off.

I was looking at the instructions on the hammerite tin and it says you need fixing agents, primer, then the colour, then a laquear.

Now do I just use a degreaser then a bit of wet and dry? Do I need to get down to the bare metal or just get rid of the crud and make sure it is smooth?

I did the forks on the GPZ some years ago, with decent results IMO... (sorry no close-up pics cos I've since sold the bike).

I just degreased & cleaned them, then rubbed down the existing surface with 2 or 3 different grades of wet & dry until there was a smooth, but "keyed" surface.
I think I gave it two light layers of undercoat, then built up the 3 or 4 layers of Hammerite over that. Also did 2 light coats of lacquer in an attempt to reduce the chances of the finish wearing off.

TBH I wouldn't have bothered with the laquer personally, but I had some spare in the garage, and decided to put it to good use.

It's really just a matter of taking the time to do the prep work, and also letting the coats dry properly before spraying the next one

HTH Thumbs Up

Just done mine on the speed triple.

scotchbrite pad, then three coats of Plasticote black enamel (from Wilkinsons, NOT Halfords), good finish and quick.
