Basically my mate has a Arai Quantum that he has only worn on a few track days, never dropped, always stored away from direct sunlight in a protective bag. Thing is its 5 years old. Should I buy or not? I know some people have said throw it away after 4 years. Is this because of UV?
Thanks

Depends how much you value your skull.

Personally, if it conforms to law then I dont give a flying monkeys.

If you want to believe all the marketing crap about damage to glue and so on then go ahead. Im buying a 2 year old arai in a week for £165 thats never been worn because it came up. Im currently Rocking a HJC IS-Max which I bought new (And is pretty shit) and an Arai FV from 1998 that I got for £8 on ebay.

If you go second hand, give it a bloody good clean and disinfect. The germs of somebody else and all their hair grease are probably the only things wrong with it.

I wouldn't be worried about the age, more about the history.

How much do you trust him? Do you trust everyone that he trusts? Has he ever loaned it to anyone else? Have they dropped it? Has he loaned you it to try out? If so, how does he know you haven't dropped it?

I personally would'nt buy a second hand lid, even if it has just been used a few times, could still have moulded into a slightly different shape than your own noggin Thumbs Up

I'm sure I saw some Arai Quantum's at George White Swindon the other day... Can't remember how much they were going for though.

Thumbs Up

The issue regarding UV is a total myth, particularly with tri laminate material helmets, and even polycarb or thermo plastic helmets are not affected anymore.

It was an issue with polycarb helmets going back around 15 - 20 years ago, but BSI had a whole range of polycarbs outside on their roof 24/7 which were then regularly tested and no degredation of the shell was found.

A good well maintained helmet should dependant on use, last about 5 years, however this rule is dependant on a number of factors.  If you are a high mileage user, or you perspire a lot, then you may need to consider changing it more regularly, say every 2 – 3 years as the degradation of the liner will be accelerated.

If the helmet has been kept somewhere cool, that will extend its life, but the easy way to tell is to try and compress the front of the lining above the eyes with your thumb.

If it still feels quite compliant and spongy, then it should still be OK, however if it feels hard, then the styrofoam liner will be on its way out and no shock absorbancy will remain.

A helmet used infrequently and kept well stored can still be fine 10+ years after production date, but if the wearer sweats a lot and a lot of moisture or heat has got into the liner, or if it has been dropped or there has been a suggestion that it has been dropped, then don't risk it.

I would never buy a second hand helmet.

With regards my own lids, when I used to wear them everyday I changed them every 3-4 years, just because they wore out, the shell still looked good but the inner looked tired. the lid I have now is just on the 5 year mark and still looks and feels good, but as I don't wear it as often I will keep it a bit longer, or until I see one I like better.

I wouldn't have a problem using a 5 year old helmet. However I would expect a second hand helmet to be very cheap.
