Hiya all,

Just a quick question, I derestricted my R6 recently, can anyone confirm that the kit is just the 4 washers that sit in the carb block?

Cheers,
Cougs.

To be honest I'm not sure Goose,

I thought I had deresticted it and ive been looking at the Haynes which states after a 1/4 mile of 11 seconds terminal speed should be 129 odd. Now I just ran it on a straight and it was struggling to get 106. The power isnt what I thought it would be either.

I took 4 plates out of the top of the carbs but Im thinking there may be something else which is restricting the bike, im considering putting the plates back in as opposed to having a half restricted bike.

Cougs.

Hmm, an R6 struggling to get to 106 - sounds bad!

Mine was doing 130 before I had even realised it!! Laughing Laughing
(But that wasn't a restricted one of course!!)

It's sad to have such a powerful bike and then take it's balls away!! Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Laughing Laughing

When my VFR was de restricted it ran *really* badly. I took it in for a service and they balanced the carbs. From then on it was Sweeeet! Smile

Try that. Smile

Its not the mechanics place to say if your bike should be restricted or not. Don't worry about it. Plus they didn't ought to have the carbs off really. If they do you've got to worry! Smile

This is why I won't restrict another bike. Confused Rather risk it with full power!

The R6 could have been set up to suit the restrictors a bit better, i.e carbs balanced, some garage's do it, some don't!

Get the carbs balanced and cleaned and try again, my ZXR has had problems ever since I de-restricted the thing which is damn annoying, I might balance the carbs and see what difference that makes actually.

Take it to a garage but don't mention the restrictors, it's not like they will care!

I've balanced carbs on an R6 several times before, if you can get it to Reading I have a tool and don't mind doing it one weekend.

However I know bugger all about how they are restricted, I would think Mr Goose is your best hope for an answer on that subject. Confused

I'm pretty sure Goose's was just the 4 washers and nothing else. We didn't take anything else apart the day that they fell out.

Little inline fours only need 4 washers Razz

Real bikes need throttle stops as well Wink Razz

At a guess i'd say for carb balance to limit top end they would have to be miles and miles out of adjustment, you would probably notice bad idle, bad rev responce at standstill when blipping the throttle and a jerky ride when at a steady throttle riding, it could be carb balance and would definatley be a good idea to get them checked.

I am not sure why but washers in inlet and stops in carb tops ring a bell.

Another line of thinking would be to rip off air box and see how far the valves open up when you twist the throttle and also try and push the slides open with a clean finger, they should all open fully.

I hope you find the fault without too much grief.

Are you sure it's not firing on 3 cylinders? We've had a couple of 600's (A GSXR6 SRAD, and an R6) come back after we've sent them out restricted and people have derestricted them themselves. We found that in one case (R6) it was badly balanced, and in the other case (GSXR) the plug on one of the cylinders was totally shagged due to the restriction.

Cheers for the help people.

I wondered if it might be firing on 3 cylinders, would changing the plugs on that sort it out? I will try and get the carbs balanced at the service, and the plugs replaced at the same time, is this a relatively simple job?

Dusty, I'm due to be in Portsmouth soon, how long you reckon it would take me to get to reading, as I may take you up on that offer?

Cheers again,
Cougs.

Doing the plugs will only take about 30mins max. Will be easy to do them when you're doing the carbs. Just take the tank, airbox, carbs off, and then take the HT leads off and you're there. Balance the carbs while putting it back together. Job done, probably less than an hour total Thumbs Up

Your plugs should be changed as part of the service. Can't remember how much a service on an R6 costs off the top of my head, probably talking between £130-160, which includes your plugs, filter, oil, etc then they'll probably charge you an hours labour for balancing the carbs, we charge £25 an hour.

When goose had his done I always wondered if they had adjusted the mixture to suit (which to be honest I hope they would).

If so after taking the washers out the mixture will have to be adjusted to suit the fact it can breath again now.

Shouldn't need adjusting, the restrictors are designed with the factory settings in mind. If you've had it restricted with the standard can on then derestricted it and put a race can on it might be running badly, plugs might be fouled or something.

Hex, the mixture won't change, the restrictors are downstream of the carbs so the fuel and air are already mixed. They purely restrict the total amount of mixture going in! Wink

Hmmm well you learn something new everyday - something I never had to worry about been old an all. Laughing

Hmmm restricting after the mix has occurred.... This all seems like a pure bastardization to me, all the lovely porting on the engine and other such design factors effected by these washers.

/me goes off to ponder.

It is, but then the nice porting puts the power somewhat above 33hp. With the washers after the carbs then it should affect the airflow through the carb in much the same way as having the throttle partly closed, and so with CV carbs should happily adjust itself.

All the best

No idea, where are you coming from? Anytime over a weekend or during an evening is cool with me, just give me a shout.
As Ste said, shouldn't take longer than an hour to balance the carbs and change the plugs. The plugs can be a bit of a bitch to get to.
