I know nothing about wiring. Not a thing, its magic as far as I'm concerned. Don't know a thing about it. So this is most likely going to sound really retarded to anyone who knows anything about wiring!
Nevertheless as I was working on the front of the bike, I went about removing the heated grips off my 1999 zzr600 project, "They run straight off the battery so make sure you turn them off when you turn the bike off" I was told, so how hard can it be? Surely I cant do any damage if they run straight off the battery....
Cut the grip off the clutch side, pulled away the wiring, only wire actually connected to the bike was an earth connected to a bolt in the fairing frame that I had previously removed.
Cut off the accelerator and was greeted to see one RED wire wired into the bike, not good.
This is said wire, its soldered onto another wire so I'm thinking its just part of the heated grip assembly, just an accesory wire?
https://i969.photobucket.com/albums/ae173/imanupstart/DSC_0047.jpg

This is where it plugs into, underneath the front break assembly:
https://i969.photobucket.com/albums/ae173/imanupstart/DSC_0049.jpg

Lights and that work but the engine doesn't, charged battery, I just get a grinding noise from the battery whenever I press the starter? Havn't tried bumping it yet as the whole accelerator assembly is of a.t.m.

The only thing I can think of is the earth wire that I removed from the bike but that was just part of the heated grips, as far as I was concerned I hadn't touched the actual bikes wiring, until I saw that little bugger Confused
Any help/suggestions would be great as I'm in way over my head, wish I had just left the bloody things on now. Apologies for the essay.

Hi

In the bottom picture the thing with the 2 spade connectors is the brake light switch. Should be 2 wires going to that.

Can't tell from those piccies what else you have cut.

If the starter is making a noise it suggests that the kill switch and starter wiring are OK. Think on the ZZR the kill switch disabled both the ignition and the starter motor. However possible that both are switch by an earth on the kill switch circuit and that someone has wired the heated grips to that same earth circuit.

Afraid need a few more pics to know.

All the best

Keith

Cheers for the reply Keith. Yep two spade connectors, one has the red wire soldered on to it, break light works ok.
https://i969.photobucket.com/albums/ae173/imanupstart/DSC_0051.jpg

This is all I removed:
https://i969.photobucket.com/albums/ae173/imanupstart/DSC_0052.jpg

The two black wires at the top were attached to the grips, temp control box to the left, ground(black with a green stripe) at the bottom & the red wire, fuse, then red wire to the spade connector.

https://i969.photobucket.com/albums/ae173/imanupstart/DSC_0055.jpg

This is where all the wires seem to meet before going into the temperature control box:

Thanks for the help.

To me it looks as though you've disconnected everything correctly. You haven't accidentally blown a fuse when you disconnected it all have you?

Just looks as though the power for the grips came from the brake light feed and was grounded elsewhere, although I would think that this would make the grips only work when the ignition was on Neutral. Doesn't look as though the bikes electrics would have been relying on anything from the heated grips.

Hi

I agree with MarkJ above.

Other than the brake light switch not currently being connected it looks like you have disconnected everything.

If it is taking power from the brake light switch then it would likely be quite easy to pop a fuse by shorting that to earth.

All the best

Keith

You haven't disconnected the clutch switch have you? (similar to the brake switch in the clutch side.)

Also I'll take that Heated Grip switch off your hands if you don't want it Wink

Let me know if you are getting rid. Thumbs Up

Just wire them up via a small switch if your control unit has died.

All the best

Hi

Turn the switch to off....

Or experiment with a suitable resistor (beware excess heat) or some small pulse width modulator.

We have 3 bikes with heated grips. 2 are now running with just a switch fed from the battery via a relay triggered by the back brake light switch.

All the best

Keith

I was going to put a house style dimmer switch on the control unit, something nice and tacky like this...

Hi

Needs a suitable bike brand logo on it to really bring out the tackiness.

All the best

Hi

Hopefully.

Fuses would be the first thing I would check, and depending on what the heated grips were wired to could mean any of the fuses being blown.

All the best

Keith

3 position switch. One for off, one with the grips in series (LOW), one with them in paralell (HIGH).

I'm in the same boat as you with electrics. Absolutely hate them! Gradually learning more, though.

This sounds silly but as everyone says you seem to have disconnected it properly, is your bike in neutral and tryed the stand up?

Just a suggestion, don't mean to be patronising as we have all went mad trying to start something when a silly little thing like the killswitch being on is stopping it Laughing

^ Checked all those kinda things after my ktm fiasco, not going through that again, funny how the killswitch seems to turn itself on Razz

So all the fuses in the box looked fine, alarm fuses also good. Not sure if there are any hidden away under the tank or anything like that Confused
Tried to remove the red wire but its twisted round and soldered pretty good. Can I just cut it as close to join as possible then either add some solder on top or just wrap it in electrical tape? Proper bodge job like? Smile

Shall start putting it back together & try bumping it, if that doesn't work I'll man up and take it to the bike shop. And blame someone else.
