Hey all, Quick question really...
I know that riding a bike with more than 14BHP (Or so) On a CBT is 'illegal' And i am planning on getting my A2, Just in the meantime what is the chance and the telling off for getting pulled on a full power RS 125?

Should only be for a few months until I can afford the A2, obviously if im going to be pulled strait away and imprisoned, im not gonna even bother.. But if its not... well ;D

Thanks

The offence is 'driving otherwise than in accordance with a license'. Fine up to £1000, 3-6 penalty points and discretionary disqualification from driving. Also you would invalidate your insurance so add driving without insurance to it as well. If you haven't got insurance they can seize your vehicle right there and then.

No idea what the actual chances of getting caught are but that's what you'd be done for if you were. I would personally wait and stay legal - not worth the risk of tainting your license and pumping up your insurance premiums, or even worse, having an accident and not being covered for it which could cost you a fortune.

Thought as much, Just read around that the police cant really notice, and most people just ride around on a full powered 125 on a CBT.
Would rather stay legal, just means waiting AGES D: Ahh well Sad

Actually I suspect most Learner rides aren't criminals, could I have a link to the statistics that make you think otherwise?

A few months = AGES Shocked , grow up please!

If your approach to handling a potentially lethal motor vehicle is "what are the chances of not getting caught if I ignore the law, and is the punishment worth worrying about?" then stick to a bloody bicycle Evil or Very Mad

A few months is hardly ages. What's the point in spending money and time de-restricting your 125 when you're only going to want to buy a bigger bike as soon as you've passed? And you'll find that by de-restricting your 125 you'll actually devalue it as less people will want to buy it because of the risk of being caught riding illegal.

Save the money, get your A2 done sooner and put your money on a bigger bike, that'll be faster and more capable than your 125.

I dont have the bike yet... the one i have been offered for PX is un-restricted/arrow exhaust/power valve.
I dont have my CBT yet, Yet im just trying to plan the best way to do this...
sorry if that sounded childish, but i was simply trying to find out more about this is, as i have heard 'most' people ride around on un-restricted RS's on their CBT.
A few months was a under-estimate.. More like 6/7 months (20/m savings..)

thanks for all your input so far.

I would say 'most' people start on a sensible learner bike that isn't so fragile or likely to go wrong as an RS125, and upgrade to a decent big bike when they have passed their tests (and sell the learner 125 for what you paid or thereabouts).

I like the fact that i will have to keep it in shape... I dont think i will have many problems doing a top end re-rebuild, and i have people who can help - Although this may be naive. Not only will it be my means of transport, it'l be my hobby/project as my current one (A Computer) is being PX'd for it.

Right now, i have no intentions of getting a bigger bike (even tho i want my A2), i would be quite happy on a RS for 4+ years, rather then buying a half decent 125 and then selling it for something bigger. Hopefully by then car insurance is half decent. But then again only time will tell

Fantastic starter bike as long as you are well aware of the increased maintenance it will need as opposed to a four stroke 125cc motorcycle etc.

As for you'll be happy riding it for four years or more, how the heck do you know that? You don't even OWN one yet! Take a step back and realise that a MASSIVE majority get bored of the power of a 125cc motorcycle rather quickly when they know they could have something faster, comfier and easier to ride.

As for the risk you take riding it illegally, well, you are up for (if caught):

Riding not in accordance with your licence.
Riding with no insurance against third party risks.

Those would net you 6 points and a pretty hefty fine if the CPS are feeling nice that day, they could even give you up to 9 points which means when you DO pass a test, one speeding offence and boom, licence gone.

If you want to take the risk, that is completely up to you, however the better way to do this would be to ride it RESTRICTED until you are 21 and then pay for your DAS as you are then free to ride whatever motorcycle you like with zero restrictions and no 'L' plates, why would you NOT want to do that? You will get bored on an RS125.

Best of luck.

Thank you all for your replies so far Thumbs Up Karma

The only problem with riding it restricted, is its already Full power, With Arrow exhaust.

Even with a A2, i will be limited to 33BHP (Roughly what a RS has) I could get a bigger bike and ride that, but i cant afford the A2 yet.. I need to get on the road ASAP, as its actually costing MORE getting the bus.

I think I will just have to find another 125, and ride that. I wasn't planning on getting a bigger bigger bike either ways..

PX your computer for something 'different' you have a licence for!
riding de-restricted RS is no different legally than riding an R1 or a hyabusa, without valid licence!
EARN the right to rid full power bike......
and RS125 wont be anywhere near as attractive, as you'll get more 'bike' more cheaply and more reliably from a restricted 400 or 500 or even 650, but you could still gt one if you wanted.

Meanwhile if pennies are priority and it's going to take you umpety months to save up for tests, you REALLY dont want an RS sapping your spare cash, in its high running costs!

Thing sups more petrol per mile than my 750, and is a higher insurance group than some 500's!

The 'Sensible' thing to do, which you probably allready know, but rally don't want to hear, would be to sell your computer or PX it for something boring and mundane, like a CG125 or SR or N or whatever; slow, uninspiring, but cheap and bludy ecconomical, you stand better chance of affording to actually run.

You might even manage to squeez the cash out the deal to do tests.... post CBT they only total £121.50's worth FFS...... so you CAN afford do tests and get onto something more 'intersting when you have proved you are competent and responsible enough to have it 'legally'.

RS, on a shoe-string? Nope. Likely story is it will prove to suck your cash on overheads, and maintenence, and fuel, and lave you cadging lifts when you cant afford to buy another bottle of silkolene or scratch the pennies together to fill the tank, let alone give it the new piston it desprately needs, or find the dosh for the tests....

A 'Next week, next month, I only need to get by.......' excuses and prayers.... 'until forever' tests never getting done, bike as often broken down or out of tax or out of insurance or out of fuel, as it is, 'fun' to ride......

Probably the one reason most 'unrestricted' RS L-Platers don't get cought, so often', bikes are so seldom on the road, cops dont' have much chance to catch them!

Cheer's for the helpfull reply once again mike! Karma Swear you must follow us noobs around and give us a good page of good info to digest Very Happy

I have just been toying with a lot of different idea's and ways of getting around stuff. Im sure once i had the licences (wont be paying for my car lessons very soon) I'd be in the clear and be able to afford to pay out for the bike. Im sort of stuck in the narrow end of a bottle right now..

Im not TOO bothered about what bike, Just that's whats been offered to me by a BCF member for a very reasonable deal that i was trying to work around. And as, so far, i haven't had any other interest about the PC.

If i could sell it, i would have about 800 (give take a 50/75) to buy something + a bit extra if i needed. I could then get my CBT, get my insurance and have a nice little run around - If only things where this easy Thumbs Down

Everything I was gonna say is here.
Just to add: Pretty sure some of the RS 125's are over the power to weight restriction on a restricted license. So even if you have a full license, but restricted for 2 years - they're still over.

33HP yes, but I swear they are over the p/w ratio
