there coming along nicely .still slow as you would expect and probably very heavy . but i for one have great hope for these bikes . how long will it be before we see plutonium powered twin drive ceramic rotors lol Mr. Green id imagine the acceleration is very good .
so what is your thoughts on the future of the electric bike

Would road tax be free for an electric bike? Although I suppose if it is and the bikes finally became decent then no doubt they'd change it anyway! Neutral

yes they are tax exempt to the best of my knowledge . and there is a limit to the power witch contradicts what sort of license u need for one . anything that goes faster than 30 mph needs a cbt witch still has the 2 year limit . i think if they did get mainstream in the future and were widely used then ye i rekon they would soon slap tax on them to

My imaginations..
0) epoch-making battery performance improvement
1) Fuel cell bike
2) trolley bike
3) Inductive charging technology
will be put to practical use in the future. I think 0) and 3) will make electric bikes practical.

They'd be fantastic in off roaders (No more noise complaints and peak torque all of the time) if they can sort the weight penalty, and if you had a short commute (like in a scooter). For generally blatting and long trips I'm not so sure.

Not coming along massively in the last couple of years from what I've seen.
As ever, it's batteries holding it back. Be interesting to see what happens with fuel cell technology etc.

I still think electric-push bike style ones make a lot more sense than those attempting to duplicate motorbikes.

I rode one last weekend. It was an American motorcycle company carrying out some UK market research - I was paid £45 for turning up and answering a load of question on my bike preference and what I look for/like in a motorcycle. I was then taken into a room with 7 bikes which I had to answer questions on, 3 of them were current models (Street Triple, Harly Iron 883, and a GSR750) and the remaining 4 were different styles of electric bike, obviously the Street got top marks! I was then taken via golf buggy to test ride one of the electrics bikes back to back with a GSR750 around a small circuit marked out with cones - surprisingly apart from the lack of gears and a petrol engine the electric bike felt allot better then the Suzuki, the automatic back brake was a little weird but the bike felt great. However would I think about buying one.... No.

Really?
So where does the elctric to charge the batteries com from?
And what about all the nasty chemicals & rare metals in the batteries?

They did a 'Total, cradle to grave, Eco Impact' study on Toyota Prius... I seem to recall it actually worked out MORE harmful to the enviroment in total than a 1950's V8 Chevvy, or something....

SURE they make no 'emmissions' at point of us, but THAT is about the ONLY thing eco friendly about them!

shit mileage 30/35miles
do around 40mph
uneconomical due to battery disposal and replacement price
but they do look good

I recently calculated that if I swapped my 125 scooter for a six grand plus leccy it would take me nearly eight years to break even, assuming I could charge it for free and never needed to change the battery over the 72000 miles I'd cover in that time.

I've no problem with electric bikes (or cars for that matter). At the moment though the batteries aren't up to the job and the prices are to high. Probably be a different story in five or ten years though.

The only real exemption they can squeeze under is the one for Sinclair C5s, which means a top speed of 15mph and being able to be propelled by pedals. After that it is a motorcycle so would require CBT / full licence, along with helmet, insurance, etc.

All the best

I watched on one of the Charlie Ewan programmes electric off road bikes that were very impressive. The down side with all electric vehicles is the recharging. If the recharge was as easy as filling up with petrol AND you got a good 200 miles at speed with each charge. I'm sure it would be easy to do if the investment was made and the idea that it is all tree hugging was got rid of.

I'd love an electric/fuel cell bike provided it had similar performance to my ZX9R, had a 200mile range, could be recharged in the time it would normally take me to fill up on fuel, and was as cheap as my current bike to run.

In such circumstances then why not?
