Hi all

Previously I posted a thread about an odd noise coming from my engine https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=222783

I'll be honest i've left it be since that post in the vain hope that it would dissapear. Unfortunetly it has since got worse until today. Today the noise has developed into a much more audible scratchy/rattly noise when the bike is stationary and when its going along it rattles like an old bus.
Anyone got any suggestions before it goes pop on me?

Cheers

First check that all engine mount and other bolts are tight.
Hopefully it's just a bolt worked itself loose.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

Im pretty certain that the engine mounting bolts are secure. Nothing rattling around there. Its hard to establish the source of the noise but I do reckon it is coming from around the head area.

I think a trip to the garage for the valves (which didnt get their 26k check - bikes at 36k now), cam chain and cam chain tensioner is going to be my next port of call. Typically this happens the week before payday too... Rolling Eyes

Thought I would follow up on my post here I think i have 3 options.

1. Blueprint the engine from scratch. £££
2. Buy a new engine. ££
3. Sell the bike for bits and try to get a new one. £?

Clearly not the news I wanted. To add into the mix the missus has started up with the old 'motorbikes are dangerous' shit too. Tits and gary aren't washing as she's 9 months up the duff.

At this moment, copious amounts of Stella havent helped.... Suggestions or props welcome

The 'cat engine is the same basic unit used in all the FZR's (from '93 a direct replacement). You also have the option of fitting a 750 engine too. There are plenty around, but S/H engines of this vintage must be considered a risk.
'Cats are still well regarded and command a good price, even as a spares/repair project. I would cut my losses, either part it out or sell as a complete unit and then go buy a Honda, (wife permitting of course).

Thanks for the advice. After sleeping on it and taking into consideration the amount of miles I do per week (300). The bike would be touching 48k this time next year and then 60k the following year. I can't see it ever hitting 60k miles as its 12 years old and not exactly in an exemplary state.

I reckon the best solution would be to sell it for spares/repair via eBay/Gumtree. This would give me a deposit to then finance another younger bike.
