bought a 1998 aprilla rs 125 the other day
the battery was flat on the bike but it starts ok with a push
bought a new battery yesterday and fitted it and everything was good, electric start lights etc. all working done about 4-5 miles.
came out today bike started fine. went about 4 miles and when i went to start the bike again it seems the battery is flat
the bike has problems even lighting up the neutral light or the digital display.
i was just wondering if anyone knew what the problem would be, i assume its not charging the battery, but would it of flattened a brand new battery in less than 10 miles ?
how do i go about sorting it out, as me and my friend who has an RS have another full bike for parts

If its got a alarm itll have a fob with buttons which you have to press to disable the alarm before turning the ignition on.

Did you fill the new battery correctly? know may seem a daft thing to ask but you did fully charge the battery on a low ampage charge for 8-12 hours before trying to use it?

no fob so probably no alarm then

cells all filled to max level
battery was fully charged

volt meter on digital display just sits at 8v when idling or revving or turned off

i dont trust those displays so put voltmeter on battery and it is 4.9volts on tickover and still 4.9 at 6000 rpm+

so bike is not charging battery.

how would i go about testing to see which part of charging circuit needs replacing ?

obtain a manual for your bike, unplug the stator from the loom, and follow the manual to test accross all the connectors in the block whilst the bike is running and see if its the readings the manual gives you, if not then its the stator gone, this is the first thing to check, if this reads fine then follow the manual instructions again and this time check the connector that connects into the regulator rectifier, again with the bike running

if its either gone i might be able to help you out as i know someone that has a rs in parts and is selling them, cheaper than ebay prices aswell, also may be able to help you with removal and fitting depending where you live, i have the adaquate tools and a flywheel puller set

Hi

Firstly, which engine does your bike have? If it is the older Rotax 123 engine then the ignition is self generating. It doesn't need the battery to run.

If the older one then there are 3 wires from the stator to the regulator rectifier. Disconnect these and check the resistance over each pair (ie, if you call them A, B and C, then check A to B, then B to C and then A to C). You can also check the AC voltage to the regulator / rectifier over those wires with the engine running, but I would suspect any problem should be obvious from the resistance.

That said I would be 90% sure that the problem is the regulator / rectifier.

DO NOT do this unless the manual tells you to. Firstly the main thing to check is the voltage, and that is checked in parallel. Disconnect the wires and connect the voltmeter and you are checking in series.

All the best

Keith

well guys
stripped pillion seat and plastics off
(2 back bolts were siezed real hard to get out)
the connector between loom and regulator was corroded
the orange wire from loom into connector was snapped
cleaned connector up a bit
rejoined orange wire into connector

battery was flat from yesterday so i jumped it
and although i know the volt meter on the dash is not accurate
it is now going up and down a little when i rev the bike instead of just sitting at 8v
and bike has the power to use the lights and horn etc now when ticking over so i assume it is charging again now.

removed battery this evening and have it on a trickle charger now, so hopefully everything will be good when i re-install it

thanks for the help
monty
