Similar to the film thread, recommend and rate some documentaries worth watching.

https://www.reuters.com/article/2011/09/26/idUS333894436320110926

This Mayan documentary is set to come out in time for the Mayan prophecy and will provide evidence that the Mayans had UFO contact... backed up by the Mexican government. A documentary with government backed information about UFOs? Sounds highly interesting.

The Revelation of the Pyramids 9/10

Watched this last week and it was very well done and extremely interesting. They had allot of modern day architects involved in some huge projects of our time, all going on camera saying that it would be impossible to replicate what they did with the great pyramid even today. Also covers other ancicent sites across the world and links them all up.

Ancient Aliens 8/10

Another good one about ancient mythology but more focused on the UFO theories.

Religilous 9/10

Bill Maher taking the absolutely piss out of religious nuts around America and questioning faith. He's a bit like Louis Theroux in provoking answers that will make them look dumb but does it far more directly and bluntly. I especially liked the Vatacan priest who was just agreeing with him saying it's all bullshit.

Inside Job 10/10

Saw this last year before it won an oscar and it certainly was deserving of it. The director exposes why the recession happened and who was responsible. Exposes allot of corruption and the people who were directly responsible for the collapse of the global economy but have never been brought to justice to this day.

Secret Britain

An old channel 4 documentary about secret locations around Britain that are not on any maps and some pretty funny laws he uses to get information.

I love a good documentary, me. The first one that springs to mind is:

B-29 Frozen In Time
The story of a team trying to recover a second world war bomber that's been frozen on a glacier for decades.

Just started watching the revelation of the pyramids. Seems really good so far, definitely worth a watch.

Star Trek: The Original Series (of Historical Documents).

https://knowyourmeme.com/system/icons/1569/original/insp_captkirk_5_.jpg

Oh, all right then. If comes on again, Secrets of the Ancients: Viking Voyage. A bunch of Nordies build a replica longship and port it across Mavis Grind in Shetland, the narrow bit between the North Sea and the Atlantic.

I'm in it momentarily, going "Raaargh" from a low angle, and the wife used to live next to Mavis Grind, as in, they were filming from her old front garden[1].

She used to port boats up there all the time as a yoof, and says that the method they finally "rediscovered" is common knowledge in Shetland. If they'd just bothered to ask, any of the Zetlanders they got in to haul on ropes could have told them how to do it the easy way. Rolling Eyes

[1] It's very bushy.

I watched two great little series on BBC in the last few months:

Monty Don's "Italian Garden" series.

I managed to watch the first 2, missed the other 2 in the series, and (despite Tarmacsurfer's best efforts) ... am hopeless at downloading from [whatever those sites are called].

Also ...
(I know, I'm old)
... a tiny 3-part one-off about perfumes. It was fantastic.

Banged up abroad - Henry Hill, the original Goodfella. As the title suggests, the film Goodfellas was based on his life, pretty interesting if you like true crime.

Fatbelly - Documentry about Mark "Chopper" Read, again fans of the film will love it, and any true crime fan shall enjoy old uncle chop chops yarns about H division in Pentridge and the like.

DMT: The spirit molecule - For those that don't know, Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is one of the most powerful hallucinogens in the world, and is endogenous is everyone and practically every living thing. This is a documentry brought about by the work of Dr Rick Strassman who measured it's effects both biochemically and psychologically in some 30 patients over a couple of years, but more than that it explores the chemical itself in terms of it's use in shamanic cultures, as well trip reports and descriptions from people who have stepped into the abyss, and not your average drug taking schmo, these are reports from doctors, psychiatrists, educated persons shall we say. As someone who has also taken this journey, I thoroughly recommend both the documentry and the substance itself, in the right setting with the right attitude of course.

Dirty Pictures - A documentry about the life of pioneering pharmacologist Alexander "Sasha" Shuglin, also known, much to his displeasure, as the "Godfather of Ecstasy". Were it not for Shulgin, anyone who's ever taken Ecstasy has this man to thank for it, and a wealth of other chemical delights. The part with the ex-DEA agent is particuarly enjoyable.

Freakanomics - Interesting documentry about some leftfield statistical studies that two maths-savvy guys performed and came up with, hard to explain what it's about really but it's rather interesting. Google it.

Starsuckers - Fantastic documentry about the current state of the media today and it's impact on people, the wicked empire of reality TV. Anyone with an ounce of intelligence will enjoy and agree with pretty much everything that is put forward in this one, I really liked it.

Ancient aliens is......ok, but they speculate huge amounts, use unreliable sources, hell it even spawned it's own meme...

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E8mHWJc7u5M/TeJ9gGxCGrI/AAAAAAAAAZs/XEYujDt4f1Y/s1600/therefore+aliens.jpg

There's a shit-ton of documentrys I'll list later, I watch a lot since normal television usually makes me want to end my existence.

Thought this was quite poor tbh, not enough scientific analysis or debate, just the narrator feeding you 'facts'. Had promise, but failed miserably.

Both excellent, the perfume one was particularly interesting as it is such an esoteric topic, yet the dudes involved (like the chap living on the island) take is really. fucking. seriously.

Fascinating. An in contrast to the Egyptian doc, actully included a lot of credible people talking about it in a rational way. Would have liked more science in there as to how it actually works (like brain activity etc), but I suspect that is missing because there has not been enough research. Needs trying, but have to work my way up to that over the next couple of years.

Walking The Amazon - 10/10

The only bloke to have walked the entire length of the Amazon, took him a couple of years and he filmed it all. I love stuff like this, the only downside is I think it could have been stretched out over a few more episodes. 2 years condensed into 2 hours but still a great watch.

Can watch it here: https://www.channel5.com/shows/walking-the-amazon

How To Build A Volcano - 8/10

Pretty cool what they did and simulated what happens in volcanos on a large scale. Again, only a 45 minute episode, would have been cool to see some more experiments.

Can watch here: https://www.channel5.com/shows/how-to-build-a-volcano

The Union, the business behind getting high

A very well built documentary about cannabis and drug prohibition. Does the drug prohibition work? Have a look and think for yourself.

won't be to everyones taste but worth a look and available on Google video's

This!

I have the whole series and watched it while being shoved around Afghanistan in the back of a Herc Laughing It's a very good series not only because it covers every aspect of the war but because of the interviews.
It was recorded when the events were still fresh enough in the peoples memories that they recall fine detail, something that lacks in later WW2 documentaries.

Also the BBC made a documentary covering the war in Burma, I think it was called 'The Forgotten Army'. Truly super-human efforts went into that fight.

Exactly, lack of research due to not being able to get permission to do so, I think Strassman was very lucky to have even got to have done the work he did, the book reads more as a description of how difficult it is to get a study going as it happens, but does have the trip report element to it as well. Definitely worth reading.

Let me know when you're ready an I'll hook you up.

More documentries:

Dear Zachary: A letter to a son about his father - Possibly one of the saddest thing I've ever watched. Can't really explain much without ruining it, a guy gets murdered not long after his son is born so his best friend makes a video with all his friends/family about his dad so he can get an idea of who he was and what he was like when he is older, but there's a twist, and it's not pleasent. Just watch it.

Catfish - Guys make a documentry about one of them who forms an online relationship with a girl on facebook. Naturally there is a twist to it all, some speculation on whether it's all fake or not, but either way it's an interesting film.

Ken Burns 'The Civil War' is a good un

There's also a Channel 4 docu from '83 called 'The Spanish Civil War'. Some interviews with former International Brigades, who are probably long gone.

'1421: The Year China Discovered America' is a decent watch but a bit left field.

Forgot about this, watched it a while back on Channel 4 and it's still up to watch now.

Interesting and Dr Nakamats is one funny character to watch.

The Invention of Dr Nakamats

https://www.channel4.com/programmes/the-invention-of-dr-nakamats/4od

Kaspar Astrup Schröder's film is a portrait of one of the world's more eccentric inventors. Octogenarian Yoshiro Nakamatsu claims to hold over 3,000 patents - among them the basic technology for the floppy disk, the digital display and an aphrodisiac called Love Jet.

He was awarded the 2005 Ig Nobel Prize for Nutrition, for photographing and retrospectively analyzing every meal he has consumed during a period of 34 years (and counting). He fully intends to live to the age of 144 years thanks to a strict dietary regime and plenty of exercise in between trips to the patent office, book signings and lectures.

And, of course, he is still coming up with inventions, using his tried and trusted method of immersion in water and holding his breath until an idea pops into his head; fortunately he invented the underwater notepad so he can record his latest brainwave.

I love a good documentary. I have a thing for 'Classic Albums' at the moment. I recently watched "Classic Albums: Songs in the key of life" which wasn't as good as some but was OK. The best ones (IMO) are The Doors, Nevermind, Rumours and A Night At The Opera. British Steel is interesting too. You don't even have to be a fan of the music IMO.

There are some good history channel and discovery docs around too. For example, Fight Science is quite cool, as is Human Weapon.

Moon Machines is a great series too, if you're in any way a space nerd.

World War One in Colour: https://www.youtube.com/user/HistoryHolland#p/u/36/TAJA7Cibfx4

This chap's also got a series on the Spanish Armada which is quite interesting.

Also, Jeremy Clarkson's Greatest Raid of All Time is quite amazing - tells of a raid on a German port by Commandos in WWII.

Having just googled Cockleshell heroes I think they're different raids. Looks like Cockleshell heroes was a raid with canoes (?!) but the one I mentioned is a raid using unsuitable old boats!

yeah it was a suicide mission from the beginning, the canoed up a river to attack a german base
I first heard the story when I joined the marines but it was years later before I seen the film
couple of years ago there was a documentary made about it can't remember who narrated it

Quote:
For 10 marines in December 1942, their secret mission was so daring and dramatic they were hailed as the Cockleshell Heroes and in 1955, immortalised in film.

Unbeknown to them when they signed up for "hazardous service", their job was to the attack enemy German ships moored at the port of Bordeaux in occupied France from their canoes.

Only two men survived to tell the tale, but its significance reportedly led Winston Churchill to say he believed the raid could have shortened the war by six months.
