I took the valve cover off today to paint it as it looked awful. All went well and whilst i was there i re-checked the valve clearances. i re-assembled the bike and took it for a spin around the block, just to check everything was ok. I went the 500 yards to my dads house to return a spanner i had borrowed and looked down at my leg to put it on the side stand and i was covered in oil. Through my own stupidity i must have gotten distracted during re-assembly and the bolts holding the valve-cover onto the head were only finger tight. No problem i thought, it was obviously coming from here and just needed retightening. I put some more oil in and started it up, only to discover it was pissing out under the exhaust, looks to me like head-gasket! surly the loose bolts Would the cause a drop in pressure not increase in order to blow the gasket. Is there anything else around that area it could be? is it a really hard job to replace the head-gasket and what else should i replace whilst I'm there? Its literally pissing out, rather than weeping. Sorry for all the questions.

Ta

Harry

Cheers will have a look tomorrow.

Tell-tales?

It really does look like its coming from the head gasket, but the flow of oil seems far too fast for it to be the case.

so if this is the problem, would removing and re-fitting the rocker cover ensuring the gaskets are positioned correctly rectify the problem?

Thanks for your help, it is much appreciated

Maybe buy a new gasket kit, should only be a few quid. You might have overtightened some bolts and overcompressed the gasket.....either way if you're taking the cover off anyway you may as well fit new gaskets (if their cheap enough for you and you can get hold of them easily).

If the head gasket was not leaking before, taking the valve cover off would not suddenly cause it to blow.As has been said, remove the valve cover, clean all mating surfaces and apply a thin smear of Blue Hylomar to those surfaces where the rubber gasket faces, especially around the spark plug orifice.

The oil pressure to the cylinder head is not very high.It is only a few PSI.

The spark plug gaskets can easily be dislodged when refitting the cover. Best bet is to stick them with some silicone gasket sealant and be careful when putting the cover back on.

Won't be the head gasket as you wouldn't have disassembled the engine that far down.

Disregard the above. Hylomar has no place in the oil circulation system of any bike, let alone an oil boiler Suzuki. Change the seals and use a smear of grease to hold them in place while fitting the rocker cover.

I have been using 'a thin smear' of Blue Hylomar on my engines for over 35 years.Excessive amounts of the stuff will find its way into the oil filtration system of any engine,as will silicone sealant. But if only sufficient is applied so as to seal the rubber gasket, there will be none to go walkies in the engine.
