Q1) With my car insurance (and most other people's too, I imagine) I'm covered third-party on anyone else's car without having to notify the insurance company or anything like that. Is the same true with bike insurance or is it different?

Q2) The first time I ever go to buy a bike I won't have the luxury of being covered third-party on any existing insurance because I won't have any existing bike insurance. If I want to take a bike out for a test ride before buying, what can I do? Do dealers ever have insurance for people going out on test rides? Do I have to know the registration of a bike in order to get insured or could I get an insurance company to provide a day's cover for any / multiple bikes without needing to know the number plates of each one?

Entirely depends on the insurer and the policy, which entirely depends on the underwriter, so even if SirKnowsalot pops up insisting you that Foobar Insurance gave them other-bike cover, they might not offer it to you.

Entirely depends on the dealer.

Insurers will want a registration, and relatively few of them do short term cover. You might try eBikeInsurance, since they don't charge for policy changes and you may be able to take out a 1 month policy then chop and change bikes several times. I don't know of any that will do "any bike" cover for non-dealers.

Sorry, I know that's not the answer you're looking for, but the situation changes from insurer to insurer and day to day (as they switch underwriters) so you'll have to do most of the clicking and reading yourself.

Hi

Also worth checking your car insurance. Some policies cover you for other cars 3rd party, but others cover you for other vehicles.

All the best

Good idea, unfortunately I've just called them and they said no, but it was worth a shot, cheers.
