Is it just me or are the roads absolutely knackered? I'm finding myself counting the amount of harsh bumps and how many times my bike is bouncing along a stretch of road.

They've just done some sort of digging on a road near me which was smooth now they've just left a big channel down the centre of one side which is just atrocious to ride on.

they've just finished building a new housing estate and left the roads in a right state from all the crap machinery they've been driving up and down it. These private companies should have to clean up the mess they've made.

Is there anything we can do I'm getting absolutely sick of playing 'avoid the pothole/sunken grate' whilst trying to watch in front of me as well...

Any kind of petition or anything?

Take photo and head for the Council's website.

Only the whingers bother, that's why the posh estate get nice repairs and chavsville don't.

1st bit yes, 2nd bit bollocks - there's a huge backlog everywhere and when they do repairs they are temporary patches which will be out again if next winter is anything like the last two.
North Yorkshire isn't chavsville and off the main A roads you need to be careful there's all sorts of problems.

Wales has no money. They were turning off street lights in an entire town in an effort to save money, that's how broke they are. So pot holes and road surface are only going to be getting worse.

From personal experience i can say Shropshire's A roads are in better condition than Cheshire's and Derbyshire's.
On the A34 there are some holes that would bottom out most forks.
Marmalade could give some insight into the state of the nation's roads.

I still stand by my flippant remark. Chavsville places like wot i drove through today in Manchester. They have the crappy roads for longer as people don't tend to complain.

Depends on the council. zanuLabour and now Plaid Commie in Glasgow fix the roads in the sink estates that they need to vote them in, while leaving the nice places to rot as they'll never vote for either of them anyway.

Having just come back from 2 weeks in California, it's really struck me (in the spine) that we've basically got 3rd World roads here. We import all of our goods, while the infrastructure rots under us - hellllo, last days of the Roman Empire.

The road I live on has a pothole about half a foot deep (no joke). It's got the little white square boxes around the potholed areas, but on top of it being very pot-holey, there's just loose gravel where whoever has surfaced it has done a shit job.

They'll just patch the holes and consider it "job done" when really it should be a case of if say on a Y length stretch of road there are more than X potholes, it should be resurfaced. The patches are still bumpy when you ride over them.

The A roads and B Roads round here are shocking. The from my Village in Harwood that goes towards Ainsworth and Bury is a disgrace. Where the white line is supposed to be is a potholed groove. The Rest of the road has various sized pot holes along the road.

I know Greece and its Islands are in financial ruin at the moment, but when i went to Rhodes last year. And Hired a bike, it was a dream come true. The main roads are silky smooth. Even the back roads between the various hotels etc are nicely surfaced compare to our shite hole.

They would rather spunk money into paying scrubbers the housing benefits and that waste of bloody time Olympics which won't benefit the north of England in the slightest.

This was one of the reasons why i got rid of a sportsbike and got a big bouncy 'adventure' bike.

Now pot holes and flaky tarmac dont bother me at all.

What really pisses me off that every year, round about April/May time (just when the weather is warming up and the roads are getting somewhere near grippy again) the council rip up the roads and 'repair' them by leaving crap loads of loose chippings on top...

Only now is my favourite section of road back to normal again.

On my into work its even worse than it was before. There were literally over a hundred potholes which they took about 2 weeks filling up over the 1.5 mile stretch.

Then they've decided to resurface it anyway, but instead of doing it in one go the road now has a layer of what can only be described as gravel over it with 'skid risk' signs up all along it.

Yeah, absolutely, the roads are getting a fair bit worse and it's quite noticeable but since it's noticeable it's avoidable.

Pay more attention to the middle and far road ahead of you and you will be able to avoid almost every single one, apart of course from the real nasty roads that are like it the entire length and width, even then you can just find another route.

However if it really is that awful you could write to your local council, your local MP, the Department for Transport and anyone else you can think of. Make sure you send it recorded delivery to the correct people AND make sure you phone them to make sure they know it's coming. Make sure the letters include the names of the people you spoke to on the phone, the street addresses which the potholes are on, stating how bad they are, what a massive danger they are and make sure you state that it is their responsibility to maintain the roads so they are always at a safe standard which they are failing to do which means they are not fulfilling their obligations.

A difference can be made if you post letters enough OR enough people post letters, maybe create a local website/petition that you can get advertised in your local area which will garner more support and put more pressure on your local council.

Best of luck. Thumbs Up!

Now, this I can tolerate to a degree but there are things that tip me over the edge.

For example, they redid a road around where I live recently which is a fairly steep hill, it's probably around 1-in-4 slope a a guess and is over a blind crest.

To cut a long story short I was heading towards it doing around the speed limit, went over the crest and bam, LOADS of chippings which made it worse than driving on ice. Since it's curved I could barely turn as that meant leaning which meant dropping, I couldn't really brake to slow down as that meant locking and due to the slope and camber the bike & I just gravitated towards the nearside wall. I just about managed to get it under control and then went very, very slow until it changed back to un-FUBAR'd road.

The one thing that annoyed me that was NOWHERE on the way to the road was there a SINGLE warning sign about the adverse road surface conditions. Nothing at all to warn you, I even checked again in case I missed it, nothing.

In my opinion that's serious negligence and in that case if I HAD dropped the motorcycle then I would have been taking photos to prove the lack of warning signs and send the council a bill for the full value of the damage to my motorcycle as it NEEDED warning signs as due to the blind crest you cannot see it until you are on it and that is one of the type of things you cannot reasonably anticipate otherwise you'd be riding at 10mph through/over any blind corner/hill.

What happened to people actually tarmacing roads? Following that, I wouldn't mind if they stonechipped it the same way they do now but ONLY if they shut the road for a day then spend a little while the next day when it's completely dry GETTING RID of the excess stonechips, not only is it safer for all road users but it saves the council money as they could possibly recycle the left over stonechips!

came off the motorway yesterday evening and went down a nearly resurfaced bit of road, loose chippings warnings and everything.

Needed to wee so pulled into a layby, braked and slide, release braked and slide, run out of layby so pulled back out onto road like nothing had happened and I was supposed to do that.

Mate and I were hooning through some East Sussex backroad a while ago and the only signage (we found out afterwards) was a tiny A4 bit of card tie-wrapped to a tree.

Cue two bikes go round a sweeping right hander to suddenly find we were on loose chippings at speed. Shocked Sketchy!

Anyhow, yes the roads are shit. I concur.
