PostPosted: 20:44 - 11 Aug 2011    Post subject: Ebay bike.. NO v5.. run away?? Reply with quote

Hi all, saw a bike I want to buy on fleabay. Its damaged repair type which is what I want.

The ad is as vague as a vague thing on a stormy night. I emails the seller with usual questions like v5/tax/MOT if it is SORN etc etc.. and how much he expects for it.. 300 quid he says.. hmm, but no answers to the important stuff..

Emails again asking for MOT/V5/TAX questions and a landline I say this save this arsing around with emails..

He replies that he bought the bike for the engine and did not realise it was a v-twin and does not have anything except the bike itself.. did not supply landline although there is a mobile listed in the ad.

Ad states would need 300 quid spent to get it back on the road but.. I know for a fact these bikes even in this condition go for at least 900-1000 quid. It is walk away time isn't it..

i fucking hate it when people cannot answer a simple question without having to be asked more than once.. even if the bike is legit I can see right away the problems of getting the bike transported when he cannot answer questions.

Smile

It honestly depends, and you can tell most about the bike you are buying from the seller and his behaviour.

I bought a bike without the V5 and it all turned out ok when I applied for it. That said I did a RAC check on it before I went ahead and it was all clear. Ask him for the VIN.

Yes it will be ok, if you are worried then give us a couple of search words that you know will bring it up. Thumbs Up

I've also bought a bike, well more than a couple actually without V5's. Just need to check as said before.
Does it have a road reg? Number plate etc?

Right,

It's been registered at some point even if he hasn't got the documents as ebay fills in some of the details when you put the reg in.

Quote:
Number of Previous Owners: 5

Quote:
Model Year: 2001 Colour: Black
Date of 1st Registration: 01 Sep 2001

No mention of the log as you say. It looks grubby as opposed to road dirty which would suggest to me it's been sitting a fair while.

The guy has 94 feedback and it's at 100% which is not that bad to be honest. He has listed a mobile number. I would be ringing him up and asking all the questions that way to be honest.

At the end of the day go with your gut feeling. If you feel uneasy then just walk away as hindsight is a bitch.
Getting a v5 isn't that bad. Had to recently do it on a mates car for him. Just means filling in forms and they will want the frame numbers and the like. They do at least attempt to contact the last registered owner, even if they can't find them.
They will basically send a letter out letting the last registered owner know that someone else has applied for the documentation and give them a chance to reply. I think my mates one took 4 weeks to come back instead of the usual 10 - 14 days.

I bought my GN400 off ebay with no V5, and had no issues at all getting one. You just send a form with the frame and engine numbers off to the DVLA (plus a cheque for £25). Took about a month to come through in my case. Things get more complicated if you don't have the reg number or evidence of one, such as an old tax disc.

In this case, the bloke does sound a little cagey Confused. However he may just have no idea how to sell a vehicle. Certainly doesn't sound too bright if he managed to buy the bike not knowing it's a V-twin.

It looks like every panel has been damaged and it has been through at least one trade auction already.

Don't be stupid.

Personally, I think as the buyer if you get any hassle or bullshit from the seller and they are not being forthright with the details then walk away! Like you said, you aren't a charity!

Hmm theres no tax disc in the tax holder in the pic either.. I wasn't all that bothered about the body work as it's a project I was after but that seems more like a mission..

Good catch about it having gone on ebay before, don't know how I missed it first time around as I have email alerts on ebay for all kinds of different key words to alert me..

Fuck it.. better safe than sorry, the wife tried saying it was a wrongin... that just made me want to buy it even more just to piss her off. I was gonna place it right outside the kitchen window, she could of looked at it everytime she done the washing up haha.. meh nevermind.

Cheers for all the help Ill give it a miss (I think??)

Looking at the guy's feedback, his history is selling things that don't require much of a description, so maybe that's why he's been a bit brief.

As others have said, the yellow crayon writing tells you it's been through an auction before, so maybe he's telling the truth and he bought it for the motor, or maybe he got it cheap as something to sell on for a quick buck.

Not sure about the result of your check; if you're that concerned about it, personally, I would do an HPi check, but that will cost you 20 quid

At best though, it does need a lot of cosmetic work and it has been standing for a while, probably outside (look at the rusty fork stanchions and the powdery motor) so it's a gamble.

I would keep watching and see what happens with the price.

If it sticks at £200ish, it's worth a punt, on the basis that you could break it and easily get your money back, if it turns out to be a pup.

My bet is that it will go a lot higher though; I was looking at a shabby, non running, old KE125 and that shook up over £200, so I could see that making at least a monkey.

At a guess it will go for quite a bit more than £200, one the main questions you need to ask yourself, can you afford to lose the money?

If you do buy it:

~ Make sure it is viewed at his address, not some garage or industrial estate etc etc.
~ Tell him you will HPI check it before coming and will want to check the VIN numbers are ok.
~ Sort the paper work inside his hose (so you know he genuinely lives there).
~ Take two pre-printed receipts and both of you sign both.

Personally, it sounds way too dodgy for my liking Thumbs Down

It looks pretty rough. When you are buying a cheap bike you need to make sure you won't have to spend much on it.

No point in buying a cheapie at £300 then spending £300 fixing it up. Might as well just spend £600 on something mot'd.

Besides, as said, it's ebay. I've seen non running heaps sell for more than a decent runner. There's plenty of idiots on there convince themselves a bike only needs a few bits and a hours work to get it running. Totally missing the point that if it was that easy the seller would have done so and sold it for much more.

Auction, as in NOT ebay doh.. too tired (kids do that lol) I get it now with the yellow crayon on the screen.. haha..

Agreed it will go for more than what it's at now, as I said the cosmetics I can do myself not worried about that, ok with spannering not too keen on sparky bits but if needs must..

Only reason I was mentioning checks was to make sure it aint nicked.. I dont want to spend out on it for it to be taken back!

Its in Taunton and I'm in Liverpool and there are no trains! and no feckin way am I sitting on a coach for 10 hours so it would be bought unseen and delivered by courier.. all providing its cheap of course worth a punt at 400 max, anymore than that and its not worth it.. I couldnt be arsed parting it out.

Even at say 400 odd to buy and 300 to fix it would still make a few hundred selling it on but I am after keeping it for a while say 18 months before I move onto an restricted license.. Varaderos regardless of age hold their money very well, its rare to see one go for less than a "bag a sand" even cat C's. Ebay is full of spares at decent prices and there is a good following on the net for them, a few good forums with knowledgable members who are more than willing to give advice..

I know in the grand scheme of things its only pin money but I know how much things can add up to when you get into it! My missus already tolerates a new ps3 xbox and 3 laptops in the last year! so I really want to keep the costs down as much as poss! Not that she gets a say but its nice not get an ear full haha..

I think I just justified myself into a bid when I already said leave it?

(fuck me check out that barnet on Kevin Webster up there hahaha)

Yep, you're justifying it and ignoring all advice.

One thing you have to remember is you only have the sellers word that it needs £300. I can almost guarantee there is more wrong than he says.

This.

Recently one a bike on ebay, said battery was missing and 1 indicator snapped off, could put back on road for cheap.

Needs to be stripped down to find out the cause of the random blowing fuse, carb was filled with crap, tank was totally rusty...which yes fits his description.

Until you try to find the parts... either way it could be a project thats goingto cost you an arm and a leg... or you could get lucky.
