My good mate Frankie came to me with a problem with his Dymag wheel. The sprocket carrier had been tilting over on the bearing and worn the bearing seat a funny shape, making the sprocket wobble and the bearing loose in the carrier.

Apparently this doesn't happen with lower-powered bike but has been known on the bigger superbikes. Since Frankie rides a nitrous 'busa I guess this qualifies.

After seeking advice it seems that the problem occurs because the bearing is inboard of the sprocket on the carrier. On a stock suzuki, the bearing is directly in line with the sprocket but having them not in line tends to want to pull the carrier off to one side, eventually causing the problem we have. The Suzuki carrier is the green part here.

For now, I have taken a larger bearing, and machined the carrier for a shrink-fit. Bored the hole out to 0.03mm smaller then put it in the oven to heat it up, drpped in the bearing and when it cooled the bearing is clamped tight into the carrier. I then machined a 1mm thick sleeve for the ID of the bearing so the original spacers could be used with the bigger bearing ID.

The original carrier lasted more than 5k miles, so this one should be good for at least the same. In the meantime, I'm going to make him a whole new carrier from a thicker piece of alloy, so that the bearing can be lined up with the sprocket and prevent it happening again.

When I was at the Ace Cafe meet and someone said Geri was coming, I got excited until it was confirmed that it was not you.

I love you Geri, your work is amazing.

Thread resurrection!

Finished the new sprocket carrier for my mate. It came out ok so I think he will be pleased enough. I left out the dust seal for the photos:
