Just wondering when others see it as a time to fill up, do you leave it till its on half tank or reserve?

Just wondering as going fill up later and although mike has explained to me just wonded how much people fill up to (so full or half tank).

(doesnt really say in the manual how much to put it up to)

I usually wait until needle drops just below empty but usually before the light comes on.

9/10 times i fill up its usually just tripped over 200 miles!

I always fill it up but normally leave it on the side stand, just don't like the idea of over filling and running to the floor and then onto the rear tyre as most pipes run down between the swinger. Shocked

There are 3 situations in which i fill up:
I'm about to go on a long ride
I'm on reserve
I get a strange feeling like i've forgotten something, something's not quite right... I usually find i'm about 3 miles off reserve when i pull into a petrol station at this point Laughing

Though i do love a bike with a fuel gauge, it does somewhat take the fun out of things Wink

Hi

Pretty much always wait until I hit reserve and then normally fill up sitting on the bike to maximise the fuel I get in.

All the best

Keith

I fill up with the bike on the sidestand, when the odometer tells me I'll hit reserve on tomorrow's commute. Or just before a long run.

Mine is LED incredments, it had 6 green bars and 2 red. I usually fill up when its on the last red. Which is around 250 mile mark. And then i fill it to the brim.

Thumbs Up

With the SV before any long ride anywhere or when the blinking reserve light goes solid, a bit earlier if I'm in the middle of nowhere.

With the little CBR the needle can long have fallen off the red scale on reserve and it just seems to carry on forever, so whenever I feel like since it doesn't cost much anyway. Thumbs Up for 125s Very Happy

I THINK what Smiler 'means', is how close to the filler cap do you 'fill' to, when you 'fill' the tank, rather than how empty you lav it before filling.

All bikes differ, but the thing in his had is 'spill', particularly braking, after a fill, when the petrol will slosh to the front of the tank, and can over whelm the seal or vent, and slosh out...

Stripping carbs all week, plenty of experince how cold petrol will make your hands as it evaporates, and how 'itchy' it is these days, with all its addatives.

Thought I stuck in his had was, if h over filled the tank, stuff sloshs out, and in the wind, blows back into your face or collects in your lap.... que colds itchy bollocks!

So, when filling, on his bike, which has old fasioned 'saddle' tank over the back-bone frame tube, to fill to just about where he can see petrol covering the saddle, leaving plenty of air gap over the top for 'slosh'.

So, I believe, he was wondering how many people leave slosh space, and if so, how much, or if any-on fills to the brim?

Hi

If coming out of the tank like that it suggests that the filler cap isn't sealing properly (possible bent tank from someone trying to pry the cap off).

All the best

Keith

Generally fill up after 140-150 miles, this normally puts me on or nearly on reserve.

I always fill to the bottom of the neck, this leaves a nice gap for sloshing etc.

I wait until I hit reserve or if I am near a petrol station and I've done more than 100 miles. Hornets don't last much more than that Laughing

The only petrol station within 10 miles is often closed unpredictably so I usually fill up when I've done somewhere between 100 and 150 miles, the reserve light flashes about 160miles.
I set the trip meter to 0 each time I fill and this acts a bit like a fuel gauge which it doesn't have.

My reserve is 4 litres, so i fill up around 30miles into reserve.

There is no point filling up too early otherwise you're just lugging weight around for the hell of it.

rarely ever fill it up, normally i just chuck a tenner in if the lights come on. Only time i fill it up is if im going on a long trip that will need more than 1 tankfull. Dont see the point in carrying the extra weight around unless it's a big stint of 100 miles or more

Ah, in which case I think it is fair to say that MOST people fill up when they hit reserve or shortly before (based on the trip counter) and fit as much fuel in as is humanly possible.
