I want to remove the crud and corrosion from my engine prior to respraying it and was wondering what the best method would be. I was thinking of sandblasting or beadblasting but I don't know how harsh this method would be.
I would appreciate any advice from peoples that have used either of these options or who could maybe offer any alternative suggestions.

Raf from here sandblasted the engine on his XT600.

Guess who got the fun job of rebuilding that Evil or Very Mad

On the topic of engine painting I have a wee question for those who have done it, I notice most people who spray an engine do it all in one piece, with all the bolts in and the covers on etc. Surely as soon as you go near it with a spanner it will chip, crack and look a bit shit?

Vapour blasting is the best option for cleaning the engine BUT for God's sake make sure that any ports are very well blanked beforehand.
As for respraying the engine 2K Acrylic works well & the paint won't crack off when you split the cases if you use a blade on the cases before you split them. As for the bolts I usually fit a stainlees steel kit after spraying to make the bike look better anyway. Just make sure you use anti seize grease on the new bolts though or you will find the they will fret/seize.
