hey guys, been thinking about getting a new bike recently. Something thats not tatty and kinda slow, the 350 is reliable but is a bit tired now Neutral at 55k miles and 23 years old im suprised its not worse. It has been a great bike.

I'm looking at sv 650's, they seem pretty cool and are in my price range (About £1200) theres this;-

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suzuki-SV-650-S-2001-/230660776394?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item35b47421ca

This i think is about £200 over priced for the mileage. i spoke to the place today on the phone, they said the tank is one off a different sv which was yellow, says its been resprayed but obviously not very well seeing as he can tell it was yellow Laughing so thats gotta knock the value down a wee bit.
But with the mileage, he said theres no evidence that its ever had any engine work done. Should i be worried by this if i were to buy it? it does seem to be in good nick but you never know what you cant see Rolling Eyes Anything in particular thats more likely to go on sv's?

Anyway, opinions welcome Karma I think i'll go look at it tomorrow, at least if nothing else, i will have seen one up close, sat on it........and know if i can fit on it! Laughing

Thanks Thumbs Up

Here it would appear it's just about run in.

I personally know of a curvy SV650 that had 106k miles and when it went in for it's major service they thoroughly checked it out and found the valve guides worn.

At that point the owner decided that it's time for a new bike. Maintenance is the key word here though, if it's not had regular services then I would be surprised if it lasts much longer.

I've got an SV with a few more miles on it than that which was well looked after. The Suzuki place that had it in for MOT commented that it sounded better than some SVs with half the miles.

well about a month ago i bought an sv and it looked really good in the pics but i never thought it would be as clean as it was,

its done 45000 miles and rides like a new bike no strange sounds and does run perfect( touches desk).

when spending anything under 1500 quid all i can say is if everything works properly then milage doesnt really come into it within reason as when you come to sell it in 3 years its still gonna be worth about the same.

good luck and get back to us if you get it .

Try SV650.org before you go on ebay - used to frequent the site a lot a few years back, always something up for sale.

FYI SV650s don't go for a lot - I bought my first one (1999 SVS with 18k on the clock) seven years ago for £1800. Then sold it at 22k for £1300.

The next SV650S was bought new under the 0% finance scheme back in 2006 and sold for £2300 in superb condition two years later, with lot of accessories and only 15k on the clock.

They are easy to work on, especially the original carbed version with locknut adjustable tappets, and I preferred the original 'curvy' to ride. Solid little bikes, and good fun. Lots of cheap spares abound. Thumbs Up

Well, I went yesterday and had a look. Before i left the house i was thinking "theres no way im buying it, mileage too high, tak resprayed badly and i'll have the hassle of restricting it. sooo.........

Im picking it up next week Laughing Had a good look, really wasnt expecting it to be in good a nick as in the photos but it is! There was a bit of a knocking when i was rocking the bike on the forks, but he said he'll get a full 12 months M.O.T so anything wrong should be showed up there.
Quite pleased really, £1100 cash, plus taxing it and the M.O.T...Nicely just under my budget of £1200 Mr. Green

Cheers for the comments dudes, really put my mind to ease about the whole mileage thing Karma

Make sure you thoroughly check it after, or ideally before you actually agree to take it.

Nah dont think so tbh, dont really wanna keep both as i'll only be using one Neutral Might just put it on ebay in a few weeks, reckon i should be able to get £450 - £480 for it Wink

Hopefully i'll get it on thursday, get my uncle to ride it unrestricted, then i can restrict it the same day and off to newquay on the saturday for its first proper run, then into work haha!
Looking forward to the v-twin grumble Mr. Green

I'm trying to work out how you find worn valve guides without stripping the heads and can't, please enlighten me?

If the MOT ticket says YES in the advisory sheet box then you really need that sheet.

Wouldn't be too concerned about mileage. If it's been looked after I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

You could have had mine that's for sale for a little more than that which has 12 months t&t, quite a few extras and 22k miles though! Razz

That's very kind of you and appreciated but considering the only way I know how to check to see if the valve guides are worn is to measure them I still can't see how this can be done with the head still attached to the bike. Shoving your fingers in the inlet or exhaust and seeing if you can wiggle the valves isn't really a good way to check wear in the guides so I really am at a loss

I realise you may get symptoms of worn valve guides but this doesn't necessarily mean it has worn valve guides.

Also considering the replacement of the guides is a relatively quick and easy job, especially if the heads are already off why not just replace them?

I did spot yours on here but £1400 was too much really, £1200 was my max, and thats what i've spent Laughing Although a little less mileage would've been nice. Still not sure when im picking it up yet, but the wait is killing me! Laughing

Cheers for the advice guys Wink

condition is more important that mileage, you can kill any bike in 20,000 and nurse most to 100,000

Mileage is a bit high, but far from horrible.

Second hand SV engines aren't mega expensive either, so worst case you could always replace it.
Even better price with 12 months MOT.

Well guys, picked it up today... Very impressed! Mr. Green (Condesnsed version at the bottom Wink )

The day started off well, got up about 9:30 with the view of going straight there. Unfortunately this wasn't the case as my mum was faffing about and she was the only one to give me a lift! So.. i perservered and by about 11:20 we left.

Got there no problems, walked in and the guy starts telling me that they'd been broken into that morning, at this point im thinking "Oh Sh*t! My bikes been nicked hasnt it!" But no, the bike was therewith no damage, apparently the thiefs had broken into the little shed at the back....With nothing of value inside. Knocked over some parrifin and left footprints all over the place. there are some numptys out there arent there Laughing

So now he gives me some docs so i can go tax it at the post office round the corner for the 'mere' price of £74 Shocked Long gone are the days when it was just £15 Laughing
Shot back to the shop, exchanged money and documents then i was on my merry way, followed by mother Rolling Eyes
Stopped at the petrol station on the way, payed for fuel, back out, pressed the button.....'Click'! Non starter! "Great, i've bought a lemon!" Rang the guy, came and picked it up in the van and took it back to take a look. Used the booster pack on it and connected a voltmeter to it to check it was charging which it was, we both agreed that with it being sat there for a few weeks and only started to show prospective customers would be the most likely cause.

Second time lucky, i made it back with realtive ease. M6 was chocca and with my mum behing me i decided to pull off and stop somewhere to tell her that i'll just go through the traffic and she can go whatever way she wants. As i'm turning off the roundabout off the motorway my mum was paying no attention and just rejoined the massive que of a motorway.
So i went round again to rejoin with the idea of stopping next to her to say i'll make my way through, didnt see her so carried on, stopped off at a starbucks in warrington to wait for correspondance, nothing untill she rings me to say shes already at home! Laughing Then i just made my way home....... I had a sausage butty and a hot chocolate btw Wink

Got home, took the seat off, tried to take the tank off to get to the carbs but stupidly theres no fuel tap! So i need to find something to clamp the fuel pipe tomorrow morning, any ideas???

Apologies for the long rant, thats been my exciting day Wink
*Condensed version*
Bought bike, battery flat, battery charged, went home had hot chocolate, tried to restrict, failed..

OOoooooo! Forgot to say! Been looking for the restricting washers past few days, someone undercut me on ebay by £1 and got a kit for £36 (Still too much really) So i got the dimensions online, rang up a company in Rhyl, they said they could make them for a fiver! Laughing went and picked them up, just need to fit them now Wink

Does the fuel-exit bit have two hoses going to it?
Generally bikes without a specific 'tap' to turn off will have a vacuum system - when the engine's turning over, it uses a vacuum tube to open the tap, so fuel can't come out when it's not.

In the end i didnt bother disconnecting the fuel line, was long enough for me to move the tank out of the way while i set about fitting the washers.

Airbox came off a doddle, carbs were tricky through lack of access, would've been better if i'd have removed the fairings but didnt want to do that. I perservered and won! got the carbs off chucked washers in back together with much swearing and fiddling and then this ;-

https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=2955310#2955310

'tis sorted now, running well Mr. Green Going to newquay tomorrow weather permitting so that'll be a good first long ride to christen it Laughing

That must be depressing, riding it home full power, then having to restrict it!

I wouldn't have bothered, personally Razz
