A security chain to chain it up with or a final drive chain to make the wheel go round?
For security chain, see if there are any lifting equipment companies round and about you (try the yellow pages). Pop in round the back and ask them for a bit of grade 80 load chain. They are quite likely have an off-cut or some worn stuff that's been taken off a piece of lifting equipment lying about. They land up replacing a lot of chains which are 90% ok, the bit that runs through the hoist gets worn past a certain limit and the whole thing has to be replaced. The end the hook is attached to never sees any real wear.
For final drive chain, cheap ones are a false economy at best, dangerous at worst. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles. |

Because they lift twenty ton concrete trucks up with them?
Wouldn't be 100% sure that made them stronger than something with a Ride rating, but would certainly give me confidence it was strong 'enough'!
Try your local market, e-bay, pound shop, or bargain bazzare hardware shop.
ANY chain, is better than NO chain.......
You can get cheap 1" link security chains with padlock for under a tenner. They wont offer the umpety minutes diamond bit cutting resistance of something from a top name marketing co.... but they will deter the opportunist just as well. Meanwhile, any-one not put off by it, and tooled up to go through a chain..... well, they will as like be able to go through a high grade granite as they are a cheapo aldi special... it will just take them a few moments longer.... which may give you some satisfaction, but practical benefit as far as I'm concerned is minimal!
So what, takes them three minutes longer to crack it.... if they are that deturmined, what will the time it takes to listen to a motown record actually do? Will it give me time to discover them, and challenge them? Even if it did, would I REALLY want to?
"Err Excuse me Mr very large, angry looking proffessional Bike thief with very large petrol powered, fourteen inch diamond blade angle grinder in your hand.... do you mind turning that thing off, its making such a noise, it woke me up, and could PLEASE just leave my bike alone and go steal some elses?"
Yeah! I think NOT!
Could call the police, but I'd probably be on 'hold' listening to an automated answering service for an entire Motown anthology album, let alone the length of a record, before I actually got to speak to anyone, and even if I did... AND they sent some-one out to 'attend'... yeah..... 3 minutes would still be pretty insignificant, wouldn't it! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

1" think Grade 80 chain can lift 21 tonnes.
To put that in motorcycling perspective, one chain can lift 72 ~ ST1100 Pan European's
