Buying a new bike soon, and it has braided hoses. I've seen the term chucked about here and there but don't actually know what it means. From what I gather they increase brake performance? Are they worth the money?

Yes they are.

they replace the standard rubber brake lines with braided steel that wont expand as the pressure increases.

resulting in better, sharper braking with greater feeling.

IMO they are the 1st thing anyone should do to a bike.
Whats the point in making a bike go faster if it wont be able to stop Very Happy

Get it done! Thumbs Up

Also, brake hoses are supposed to be replaced every 5 years or so (Although most people don't bother).

I don't know how old your bike is but if they are due a change it's worth getting some on.

Don't really increase brake performance, unless compared to knackered hoses.

Basically the braided hoses have an inner plastic hose with an outer layer of braided steel to stop the inner hose from expanding too much (and bursting).

Standard rubber hoses also have braiding, but probably cotton and built into the rubber.

Rubber hoses shouldn't expand either (and a few years ago I measured the outer diameter of hoses on a few bikes while pulling the brake lever very hard - one that expanded the most was the standard braided steel hose on my better half Triumph Thunderbird), but do age.

Braided steel does have the down side it is less flexible, has pretty much nothing to protect the steel braiding from rubbing and being damaged (and if that wears through the hose will likely burst), nor to stop it rubbing and damaging other components

All the best

Keith
