i have just turned 16 and im buying a moped which is obviously only 50cc so i know that people are probably going to take the p*ss but i need some beginner advice Smile

i have £800 to spend on the moped and i will be derestricting it too.

i want it to be very reliable so it wont break down to often, and quick for a 50cc so a moped which will hopefully do 55mph+ so i can keep up on the roads

with that sort of budget what would be the moped im looking for? i will most likely be buying second hand.

go easy on me im new to all this stuff!

thanks for your time

You're gonna want more than £800 if you want a moped to do 55+mph. Not gonna happen I'm afraid.

Don't really know too much about mopeds, but you'd do quite well on a Piaggio Zip. Two stroke, so a bit nippier than a 4 stroke moped.
Steer clear of Chinese mopeds, a load of shit normally - though you can get one brand new with your budget.

Why are you derestricting? Sure you'll get about 40-45mph out of it, but if you get caught you'll be had for driving out of your license and also done for no insurance as your insurance expects that your 50 is restricted.
Any more info, just ask

Don't bother.

You're only going to ride it de-restricted anyway which is COMPLETELY illegal which means you're going to risk 3-6 points on your licence and a £1000 fine so your moped can do 45mph instead of 31mph? Rolling Eyes.

Either way it's going to be slower than shit so why bother risking such a huge amount of damage to your licence before you've (really) even got it if you consider a "Full" licence actually getting a licence. There is no point at all.

Your time will come, in a year's time you will be able to pass your test and ride up to 33bhp which will feel bloody fantastic to you and it will be LEGAL and the reason it will be legal is because of the training. What makes you think you're qualified to be taught how to ride a moped for a few hours and then blast along roads at nearing 50mph? Bear in mind I very, very nearly lost my life and now have to suffer pain for the rest of my life by crashing at 30mph!

Also, why do you need to do 55mph+ to be able to keep up on the roads? Do you do a lot of travelling on NSL roads? Even so you WILL NOT be able to keep up and that's the only road (that you're allowed on) that you will have to derestrict the bike to "keep up" on (apart from 40mph limits but there aren't too many of those around). Keeping up is bollocks. People can overtake you know?

The WHOLE POINT of the year spent restricted to 31mph on a moped is to teach you roadcraft on residential roads at a SLOW speed which is the best to learn at. Then once you reach 17 you are allowed to go bigger/faster because you've taken the time to learn at a slow pace, have gained some experience and are therefore safer. You realise with no experience, if you are doing 55mph (which won't happen anyway) instead of 30mph, not only are you probably around 4x more likely to seriously injure yourself if you come off but you have significantly less time to react as well, your reaction time and what you do when you react will be slow and bad anyway let alone at double the speed!

Buy any mopeds from the following brands:

Suzuki
Peugeot
Kawasaki
Yamaha
Aprilia/Piaggio
Gilera
Honda

If they are two-stroke they are going to cost more to run and they have to be looked after a lot more as they are higher-strung so if you know you're not going to bother to look after it, then don't get a two-stroke moped.

If they are four stroke, you can probably keep it for the entire year without checking anything on it except for a quick oil check/new plug and a general look over. The intricacies (and pros and cons) of both can be found out if you use the Search feature at the top of the forum.

Get the best gear you can which will cost around £250-£300 for a full set of gear.

I am not trying to be mean to you, but you are new to the roads and a teenager who inevitably thinks they are Valentino Rossi and can do whatever they want when you can't when it comes to the road, road safety and legality. When you say you "will be derestricting it", do you know ANYTHING of the law or anything of the road? Do your parents know what you're doing and how illegal it is? I doubt it.

Start off as you mean to go on, stay restricted for the first year, gain the experience, laugh at your "mates" who are derestricted yet still get overtaken by running squirrels and then get pulled by the Police and a huge fine + six points who then have to pay 4-8x the price for insurance for the next five years and they won't insure a car until they are 22/23 for that very reason.

Your time to have a bigger/faster motorcycle will come, just be patient, listen to people with more experience and that know what they are talking about, abide to the law and you'll be a great rider one day. Just don't be a dick as that's what you come over as and what everyone will see you as when you blast about on a derestricted moped at 16.

All the best.

Option 1: Put the money in a piggy bank marked "For A2 test when I hit 17". That'll be August 2012, and you'll really want to pass your test before January 2013, when the rules change for the worse.

Option 2: Buy a 125 or bigger bike, slap a "50" sticker on the side of it. You're planning to ride outwith your license and insurance either way, so might as well do it on a bigger bike. I am not being flippant here, the moment you de-restrict a 50 then you might as well be hung for a flock as for a sheep.

Option 3: Ignore us and get one of those Derbi GPR 50 Totty Magnets. We'll see you in the Workshop or Spill Counter next week.

Dude, echoing this, but you dont wnt to ruin your chances of driving and riding later in life (brother had ban, hes 21) his insurance per year is insane on a 125 with 3 points and a previous ban.

Nephews both had NRG MC3 mopeds. Both were derestricted when they reached 17.

They lasted well at 30mph. After derestriction they did about 1500 miles each then sold and went to cars as their peds started breaking. Derestricting then will REALLY reduce their life.
That and buying used peds, you dont know how they have been treated, usually turned on, pushed off the stands whilst sitting on them, ragged to hell and wheelied.

BUT

If its what you want, then get whatever. I never owned a moped but have ridden a speedfight 2, was alright to be honest.

If you know the law then you'll know that the moment you de-restrict the machine, it's no longer a "moped", it's a motorcycle.

Can I ask - and I've never heard a cogent answer to this - as you're planning to ride outwith your license, why you don't just get a (disguised) 125 instead of a 50? Really, why not?

Then why wait until your sixteen? Why fuck about breaking the law, riding a bike you dont have a licence for, pigging about with a 50, and expansion chambers and variators; why not go get yourself a zzr11 that will do 170mph, and ride that?

Its NO MORE ILLEGAL!

If you tune or de-restrict a moped so it does more than 35mph, it is no longer a moped; thats one of the defining feautres under law. Actually DO more than 35 on a moped and you are telling any-one that cares to clock you £this ent a moped' com enich me, take my bike off me and fine the fuck out of me.

Has a log book, and insurance that says it's a 'moped'? Well, if it goes more than 35, its NOT so you are also showing criminal intent and commiting fraud on TOP of breaking speed limit for vehicle type (Whatever the posted road speed limit is) plus riding other than in accordance with your licence, plus obtaining insurance bny deception, plus riding without 'valid' insurance, and riding a vehicle 'other than described on the V5 for registration index.

You might as WELL buy a ZZR1100 stick '50' stickers on teh side; go foind some bit of chinky shit 50 some-one has abandoned in a field, write down the reg no, apply for a locg book for it; get a numbpoer plate made up and slap that on the ZZR11... IN LAW it's no different.

People do it; people get away with it; but its no stroke of criminal genius.

And riding a 50 at 16, on L-Plates is a pribvilkidge not a right. If youwant to accept that porivilidge do so, but dont poush your luck, becouse if they catch you they will fuck you hard, and for a very long time.

TheShizzNizz wrote:
i want it to be very reliable so it wont break down to often

In that case you DEFINITELY donyt want to start fucking about trying to super tune a 50.

Apart from illegal; even a 'good' 50 will de-restricted struggle to do much more than 45mph. 50'ish' might be achievable from some, with a LOT of tuning, and or maybe a big bore kit, but reliability?

Yeah! You'll be sorting siezed pistons, blown primary seals, chucked rollers more often than you are riding the thing.

TheShizzNizz wrote:
and quick for a 50cc so a moped which will hopefully do 55mph+ so i can keep up on the roads

Covered, if it does more than 35mph its NOT a moped.

Meanwhile, 55mph is neither here nor there as far as keeping up with traffic of being safe.

You dont HAVE to 'keep up' with traffic; pick your roads, and you wont hold too many people up, very often, and if they dont want to go as slow as you can LEGALLY go, that's thier problem.

If you want to do anything sensible; book some riding lessons and learn to ride defensively, prepare for test when you are 17, which you could probably just eek in onder current rules to get your 'full' licence on a 125, rather than new ones coming Beginning 2013, where you'll only be able to get 125 licence on a 125, and be 19 years old to do test on a 500 DAS style to get a 'half licence' to ride a 500, and have that two years to qualify to do tests again on 'big-bike' to get 'full' full licence.

If you dont feel safe traveling at less than 35mph, wait until you are 17, and catch the bus. No-One says you HAVE to ride where you aren't comfy to.

[quote="TheShizzNizz"]with that sort of budget what would be the moped im looking for?
You're not looking for a moped, at all; you are looking for a motorbike 'pretending' to be a moped....
[quote="TheShizzNizz"]i will most likely be buying second hand.[quote="TheShizzNizz"]
Unless you buy a piece of chinese shit, that will barely even do 35, and will behave like a tuned 50, as far as reliability is concerned straight out the crate, yes, £800 wont really get you anything 'new'

But what about your budget for helmet, gloves, water-proof and protective riding gear? Tax, Insurance, MOT?

Your licence, Compulsary Basic Training to validate licence entitlement?

Hats start at about £50 for cheap and chearful, and go up to umpety hundred. But important bit is getting a good fit. Expect to pay between 80-120 for a half reasonable 'budget' helmet, around £300 for a half decent one. Hats, you cant tell how many timnes they have been dropped or crashed in; you NEVER buy them 2nd hand. Decent gloves, are around £30, a riding jacket, about £80-£120, water proof trousers or oversuit, around £50

Togging up to ride a powered tow wheeler ent cheap; you can anticipate HAVING to spend something in the order of £250 JUST for the 'gear'

Then you have probably £100 for a CBTR course, plus whatever photo-licence costs these days £30?

Then insurance for whatever you consider buying; if you intend goiung to school/college/work on the thing, that needs to be declared on the policy aplication when you ask for cover type, you select Social Domestic AND Commuting. Third Party only is minimum legal cover, but to protect the investment against it being nicked wich they frequently are; you probably want Third Party Fire & Theft, and at 16, you are probably looking at something in the order of £300 a year for insurance...

Ie: if you have £800 in your poicket; you wont have much left to buy a moped with, after you have got your gear; your licence; your CBT; and your insurance!

TheShizzNizz wrote:
go easy on me im new to all this stuff!

Fuck that, I tell it as it is; if you ent man enough to take it straight you got no business on a bike.

Grown up world is a rough tough, harsh place; with no teachers or social workers or namby pamby parents saying "There There" and making you feel better! Get used to it!

Get a pre restriction ped - AFAIK still legal to ride an unrestricted 50 if it's like, pre 77 or something.

It's what I did.

Then I made it illegal. Laughing

Buy a 2t Piaggio Zip........end of.

Light, nimble, nippy, cheap and easy to fix for when you drop it.

At the end of the day it's your choice to derestrict the bike or not and it's your licence at risk. Traffic cops ain't stupid and a moped travelling faster than it should be is dead easy to spot and will end up with you in hot water.

No woman is going to get wet over a 50.....they need a throbbing V - Twin between their legs which you won't be able to afford if you get points on your licence from pimping your ped. Thumbs Up
