Hello everyone! Very Happy Got a hankering to get back into bikes after a 4 year layoff. I want a big, fat, comfy thing, got to be a bargain, two grand-ish. I want basic servicing to be DIYable. I don't mind a bit of a project if it's fairly simple, e.g. a Cat C with superficial crash damage. Perhaps most importantly I need to have fun on it without getting into trouble...so I'm thinking that if I got something a bit lardy it would make a rewarding challenge without going stupidly fast.

Been looking on ebay....seems you can get a lot of bike for your money if you get a K1100LT or RS. Or an XJR1300. Sometimes a Buell Ulysses goes for 2 grand. Or a K1200LT for 2 and a half.

Then there's the Japanese Harley clones, e.g. the Kwak VN1500. Are they fun, or just shameful?

What I really want is an F6C, but they never seem to be less than 5 grand.

Forget about Bandits and Fazers and such, I'd just thrash them and go to prison. Which I was lucky to avoid on my Hayabusa. Embarassed So maybe the XJR1300 shouldn't be on my list.

Judging by what you say then I wouldn't even recommend a 250cc 4 stroke as it can break speed limits with ease. Wink

With that, I'd suggest a naked bike, possibly an air cooled twin like a Monster. Or at least a bike that has good chassis suspension and brakes.

Maybe a small 2 stroke? Razz

I can't stand Pans. I know they tick lots of boxes, but...I'd better not be rude about them, maybe you've got one. Wink

As for the GSX14...hmmm. Best not.

When I said "big and comfy" I had two-up touring in mind!

Too easy to do 150 on! Great bike, had one 20 years ago.

Very tempting! But maybe too tempting IYSWIM. It's hard not to rev that engine. (I used to have a Mille.)

But they're too popular now. That Euan McGregor twonk has pushed the used prices way up. And there are so many commuters blocking the road on an Adventure GS...it makes me weep.

Gotta admit a K1100 is top of my list. Maybe get a scruffy one like this for £300 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-K1100LT-MAROON-/331033719859?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item4d1325b433

And do something like this:

Or this:

But in a QD manner so I could put the stock bits back on for touring.

You would be mad to ignore the st1100 if you want something comfy and reliable for touring.
I do around 1000 miles a week on mine and had nothing but tyres, pads and oil changes in the last 60k

My divvy 900 with it's hagon and delkevics is quite a fun bike to ride, certainly hides it's weight well.

On the speeding side it charges up to 100/110 as quickly as you could want but doesn't have much more umph than that even if you really push it you wont get it above 130. Worth a look for sure.

Google the Kwak GTR1000 and read the reviews, excellent weather protection, unbreakable engine and much under appreciated so prices are very reasonable, most come with all the luggage.
