Hi there. Not all that new to biking, but I would like some comments or a review or some such on a jacket I'm interested in. I bought a textile armoured jacket when I first started riding, but I've lost quite a bit of weight since and it's now too big for me. Having looked around the local stores and such and not finding anything both in my size (I'm still rather broad, one might say) and budget I came home and had a look on that oh-so-wonderful-popular-auction-site and found this:

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fashion-Leather-Motorbike-Motorcycle-JACKET-chest-46-/280661233022?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Clothing&hash=item4158b68d7e

Has anyone else bought one of these? Or other Gearx gear for similar price? Thoughts? Reviews? Value for money?

It looks alright, but they seem pretty thin leather :/

My advice would be to scour eBay for a decent second hand leather jacket. I got mine for £25 and it came with a helmet and decent gloves! I then went out and had a look at some leather trousers that were in my local newspaper. £30 and they're IXS and brilliant! Very Happy Full set of leathers for £55!

Just make sure that you have a decent look and try on the jacket/trousers before you buy Smile

The thing with leathers is they need to fit well to offer protection. If you order one off the internet, there's no way to try it on before it gets to you.

The top brands leather jackets are between 1.2 to 1.4mm leather thickness and stitching is up to triple reinforced. You pay for quality, and quality saves your skin.

Go to a shop and try on different brands and lines. You'll find they're all cut differently and fit different body shapes. Then if your budget doesn't permit, scour ebay for a second hand bargain.

Thanks for all your advice guys. I'll give it some serious thought.

Did some research and turns out they're double stitched 1.3mm cowhide.

Still, you're right. I'll see if I can find something else local(ish).

That's all very well and good, but who knows how good quality the the leather truely is? Or how strong those double-stitches are?

Again, the best advice is to go and try on some jackets for YOURSELF. Don't follow others' advice and go straight to buy a Dainese this or a Alpinestars that. Go and try on the kit recommended, plus lots of other lines and brands. That way you can see and feel for YOURSELF which kit fits YOU the most comfortably Wink

Good luck Thumbs Up

The word that tells you all you need to know about that jacket is "fashion". That really means that its mostly all look and no substance. Most quality jackets will feel quite hard and unforgiving when new, but they will loosen up and become very comfortable the more you wear them.

^ This. Thumbs Up

And trying on a bunch of different jackets to find the perfect, most comfortable fit is priceless.

I'm shopping for some gear too, and I came across this on Amazon, any views?

Try some jackets out first as they do differ from make to make..

I'm guessing the "Fashion" part in the description might be read as "Not for use as motorcycle protection".

Could be wrong but I'd bet a bollock of your choice it'll be hugely disappointing and not up to your needs when it arrives Sad

Hm. Sorry. You might have lost a bollock there then. After looking around some bike shops and still struggling to get my size/budget, I ordered one. I was quite pleased with what came. It's pretty tough leather and the armour is thicker than from my last jacket.

Hopefully you'll never have to test it - Let's hope it holds up though. I need to get some new gear. The bright yellow textiles just don't seem appropriate any more Laughing

as mentioned above, fit is critical, and when new, it needs to be quite a bit tighter than you'd think as leather does give quite a lot.

The only real exception i've personally found to this is one piece suits with a lot of stretch panels on them, they will be fairly comfortable from the start, even of they are quite tight.

Its amazing how many people you see wearing leathers that are too big for them. I've been unfortunate enough to crash test my RST 1 piece suit recently, and with the fit being pretty much perfect, all of the armour was in the right place when I landed - it would have been quite an unpleasant crash in jeans and t shirt, that's for sure!
