I have an only 1973 Honda PC50 moped that I've recently revived and got back on the road.

Last week everything was good and it went through an MOT fine, but since then things have gone down hill.

Performance has lessened a bit since then and now I've found that when I try to run the bike with the lights on (which are direct powered) the engine dies.
I will sometimes run for a bit with the lights on, but will usuall try and give up about 5 - 10 seconds later.

Should I suspect a short, the generator or something else?!

hi mate it would be the generator but also the battery because with a good battery the lights should stay on for longer unless it doesnt have one of course (quite probable) and the generator should keep going forever or if it is fucked you will lose power on speed aswell as electric

First thing - This bike has no battery!!

It's direct lighting, as basic as it comes.

The engine runs fine at speed though if anything struggles a little low down.

yes this could be the stator then. it could be weak as only when it spins really fast does it make any power
