Is my lid still legal?

It's not been dropped or knocked, and it has a seatbelt style clip and a pop button for the loose strap. Clip still works fine, the pop button has broken and come off.

IIRC, my CBT guy said they had to have both done up or it's illegal - is this right or not?

I'm off the road ATM, but soon going to be back and wondering if I need to get a new lid. Any help here appreciated. All my searching seems to find the double-d ring fasteners, not what I have.

As long as the clip does up (chin strap) thats fine. The little button (mines also missing) is used to stop the long bit flapping in your face and neck.. it hurts Laughing

You are still fine Thumbs Up

I'm inclined to say it's not illegal.

If you want to be safe, you could just get some velcro or something to go in place of the pop stud bit.

Cheers, I was just wrapping it round the rest of the strap - and yes, it b****y hurts when it flaps at your throat. Couple of loose straps on my camelback hurt too, till I sorted 'em.

Velcro seems a good alternative, I 'll do that.

+1 for velcro, I often sew extra bits of it on to clothing anyway.

The popper that stops the strap from flapping about is not regarded as a fastener for the purposes of securing the helmet, it is the actual buckle that is the key issue.

Rest assured, your helmet is still perfectly legal.

My first lid (AGV) didn't even have the popper, just a double-d-ring fastener. I had to stuff the spare strap up inside the lid to prevent whiplash.

Get a different CBT guy.

Personally I wouldn't wear your helmet. Not for the hideous colour scheme but for the broken clip. Razz

IMO get a new one. Save this one for a rainy day or whatever, spare.

How much is your head worth, to you?

Thumbs Up

You'd buy a new helmet cause the popper is broken!? I think I could count on one hand the amount of times I've actually used one of those poppers, and definitely wouldn't get a new lid if it broke.

so bsau/ce aproved is not necessary? I understand acu is a racing sticker, but if you what you say is true then i'd be allowed to ride around in a vietnam dated m1 steel helmet so long as the chin strap was done up?

Cheers

I seem to has mis-read his post. Laughing

Depends how broken it is, will a broken popper give it a chance of becoming loose, even undone under stress or anytime during landing? Laughing

The popper has no bearing on whether the strap will come undone or not, it is the Double D or safety belt fastener that secures the helmet.

As mentioned, the popper is simply to prevent the strap flapping around.

This is the full quote

Quote:

“protective headgear” means a helmet which—

(a)either

—(i)bears a marking applied by its manufacturer indicating compliance with the specifications contained in one of the British Standards (whether or not as modified by any amendment) mentioned in Schedule 2 to these Regulations; or

(ii)is of a type manufactured for use by persons on motor cycles which by virtue of its shape, material and construction could reasonably be expected to afford to the wearer a degree of protection from accidental injury similar to or greater than that provided by a helmet of a type prescribed by regulation 5;

(b)if worn with a chin cup attached to or held in position by a strap, is provided with an additional strap (to be fastened under the wearer’s jaw) for securing the helmet to the head; and

(c)is securely fastened to the head by means of straps provided for that purpose;
and“strap” includes any fastening device.

Rogerborg only quoted point C, since it's all that was really applicable to the OP.

TL;DR Yes it does need to be ECE, BSI approved.

Not if you read section A properly. The key word is "or"

JUst cut the strap down a bit if it is flapping, on my Arai I never do the popper up, I had another lid that hada much longer strap and would flap about and hurt.

Haven't read the other replies but your lid is fine.

The popper just stops your throat getting whipped by the strap, there is no legal requirement to use the popper or have a popper fitted.

So long as the actual fastener (seatbelt, DD rings or ratchet) works it is legal.
