Hi,

Sorry, car related, but the BCF knowledge knows no bounds Thumbs Up

Ok, couple of weeks back the gears were a bit cluncky and sometimes difficult to engage. I checked the oil level and the problem seemed to disappear.
Tonight, i went to pull up at a junction, in first with the clutch down on the brakes. Suddenly it judders really violently as though im stopping in gear without the clutch down. I pulled it out of gear and it stopped. Then when trying to pull away, it felt like i was leaving off in 3rd, having to rev it but not really going anywhere, then it jolted forward and stalled. I hadnt moved my feet.
The bite on the clutch is not high, and it doesnt seem to slip. Im quite confused Crying or Very sad

Car: 1997 Fiesta 1.25 Zetec engine, Hydraulic clutch. 130,000 miles.

Any ideas?

sounds like some of the clutch lining has fallen off and jammed the clutch mate.

Your clutch is dragging, probably slave cylinder failure.

This^^^ And it's a concentric cylinder on your car which means the gearbox has to come off.

May aswell have clutch replaced at same time if you do have it done.

Check your brake fluid level, it's probably going to be low so you may want to top it up so you can get it to a garage, fill it to the top because if it runs out you will have trouble bleeding it back up and may end up paying recovery to get it there

I can't see the relevance of service history, unless it's had a clutch in the last 12 months, which may mean a warranty could come into play.

OP, I'll expand on my first post.

What you have described are classic hydraulic clutch drag symptoms; it starts with gears that are difficult to engage, then ends up where you are, pressing the pedal but not lifting the clutch drive plate, so, even with your left foot on the floor, it's trying to stall when you come to a stop.

The next step will be that you're unable to put the car in gear with the engine running, so the only way you'll get anywhere is to turn it off, put it in second, then turn the key and feather the throttle, so it moves off on the starter, while you stop it from stalling by giving it some gas, then use clutchless changes to get where you're going.

Diagnosing which part has failed is the next stage.

There are three options, which I will list in order of likelihood of failure:

1/ Slave cylinder
2/ Master cylinder
3/ Pipes

The M/C and pipes are relatively easy to check; look for signs of dampness along the length of the pipes and where they join the the M/C, also where the plastic fluid reservoir joins the main body of the M/C. Then see if there's any evidence of moisture, immediately below the clutch pedal. If there is any moisture there, touch it and rub it between your fingers, if it feels oily, then it's hydraulic fluid and your M/C is leaking back along the push rod that joins it to the brake pedal.

If everything you can see is dry, then it's the slave cylinder that's causing the problem (which it almost always is) and you can't see that, because it's inside the bell housing and doubles as the clutch thrust bearing.

The good news is, you can buy new, pattern, M/Cs and slaves for less than 50 quid, pipes shouldn't cost you more than £15; pipes and M/Cs are relatively easy to change, just a bit of a fiddle.

The bad is, if it's the slave, it's a gearbox out job and, if you're doing that, you'd be a total muppet not to fit a new pressure and friction plate, so that's another £70-120 to add to the bill.

If a clutch lasts average X miles then one could be due if the OP does not know when it was last changed then use the miles as an indication.

Hi,

No service history with the car at all. Ive owned it 18months and the clutch has always been fine, the bite is still normal. Brake fluid level is fine. Ive had a look around for the master cylinder or pipework but cant find alot. Il find the book and see whats happening, see if theres any leaks.
Il price up a clutch and cylinder, but with the current broken windscreen situation , i may just look for something else Crying or Very sad
