I passed my tests a few weeks ago on a 125. Today I bought my first ever bike, it's a restricted SV650 K6 so quite light as far as bikes go, but I found it really really heavy. And it's not like I'm small either, I'm a 6ft guy. Did anyone else find their first (big) bike really heavy? I guess it will just take a while to get used to.

Anyway I figured it was a lot easier (and safer) to sit on the bike and walk with it instead of pushing it and walking next to it. That way it feels lighter, and you wont drop it.

Yes. Well, the first one I rode, a Bandit 650. Turns out that it is relatively heavy though - your SV is about 50kg lighter. Plus, I'm a stumpy legged short arse. Feeling abashed yet? Razz

Mmm, maybe. Just be careful about turning it while going backwards or getting up any speed; if it starts to swings out over your outside leg, you'll have an interesting time holding it up that's how I dropped the Bandit. The benefit of walking next to it is that you can actively lean it against yourself - it's not going to fall over towards you, and it's less likely to go over t'other way as long as you keep the speed down.

Having done the direct access on a GS500 I guess I got used to the weight - especially having to do mod 1. Also the taller you are, the harder it is to balance the bike ( well I think so as I am 6'2" but I also have poor upper body strength but allowed as I am a girl lol). I prefer sitting on the bike to move it about as I feel I have more control.

I struggled at first but now push the bike about without too much effort. It's just practice, but helps to know that you have the safety of crash bungs or engine bars should the worst happen, so maybe invest in some if you haven't already?
