Im in the market for a new bike and I quite like the look of the ZX7R 1998 on and the ZX9R 1998 on, so what do I need to know about these bikes? Anything worth looking at around the 1998, £1500 mark, a late Thunderace?

I'd go for the 9r out of that bunch - while the 7r is the prettiest, it's also got the oldest 'feel'.
The Thunderace has the power, but is also a bit lardier.
Stock the 9R certainly isn't up to R1 levels, but in most cases will still match it up to 90% and will definitely do better over distance.

The 98 9R is a top bike, you wont go wrong tbh. Main problems ive seen are to do with the front brakes tbh

Just make sure it had the recall dont on the carbs or the carb icing is a pain, also the front brake calipers altho good...are a pain in the arse once corrosion sets in, the pins that hold the pads into the caliper are well known for seizing in, so if one you go to look at has a small hole drilled into the caliper its a good sign...means somebody has done summin about the issue Wink

The pistons in the calipers also seize in or stiffen up fairly easy ripping the seals, on my 6r (same front brakes) used to happen all the bloody time to the point where i just took the dust seals out altogether and packed the pistons out with vaseline.

The engines are solid and have plenty of go and there uber comfy compared to modern stuff.

Best of luck Thumbs Up

The one im going to look said it has a bit of vibe under braking, i'll knock him down on price if the calipers need rebuilding, but he did say they were recently rebuilt then the bike was left unused

Any reason to go for a C2 over a C1?

Stock 9 (1998 model) is 100cc down on the 98 R1, yet has a faster 1/4mile time, and the same top speed.

I'll agree handling isn't the same though Wink

@Boundy,

They are the same, but the C2 has a better (softer) rear shock, and I think they did something to gears i.e fixed a potential problem)

Suspect that's more to do with difference in gearing, lightness of front end or maybe just the rider - I'd say overall the R1 engine is more flexible. Possible with the early one it's actually a case of them being a bit TOO flighty in first gear Smile.

Chain adjusters seize in the swinging arm.

I've had to drill mine out.

It's a pain in the cock.

Other than that it seems all good! Nice engine and 'box.

I'll give a better review in about two weeks when I've clocked up a few thou. Thumbs Up

Recently bought a ZX9R to replace my dead Thundercat. My what a difference to the quality of the ride. More space, far more power and alot more comfier. Suprisingly the big 900 doesnt eat that much more fuel than the 600 - although im sure if I was gunning it everywhere it would start the drinking!

I'd highly recommend the ZX9 Thumbs Up
