My first ride in heavy rain !

I took my 50cc longjia scooter to a local repair shop yesterday saturday 3rd sept. It had been raining but had stopped so I was very aware of all I have been told about riding In the wet. I had to leave the bike with him til 5pm and on returning to collect the bike, the heavens opened! I had my waterproof bike jacket on and my high vis yellow waterproofs over my jeans. And as I proceeded on my 3 mile jorney home I wondered if I would even make it.

The rain was hitting my vizer and I could not see a thing, I opened the vizer just enough to be able to see but "what a nightmare of a jorney" being a car owner as well as having this little bike, I got home, put the scooter in my garage and got into my car to go on to get a bit of shopping.

I cant see me ever giving my car up but nor will I give the bike up, I think I will probably remain a "fare weather rider"

Don't see anything wrong in being a Fair Weather rider tbh.

It's all about choice and you now have it. I think as long as I get the right clothing I will get by in the rain but I know it wont be fun as it was the last few days in the sun. Nothing like getting out in the country at 7:30 am, sun was shining, it was warm but not HOT!

I quite enjoy riding in the rain. The first time was pretty scary, but as soon as I got to grips with it I started enjoying it. You just have to take it easy on the corners, watch out for the metal grids and road markings and of course the maniacs in their tin boxes. I use "Rain Off" on my visor and it works pretty well. Just have to give the visor a cursory wipe now and then as you trundle along.

Having commuted by bike in all weather, there were days when I'd look out the window, put my helmet away and get in the car, even though it took over twice as long and cost a fortune to park. Nowt worse than turning up to work soaking wet, having to put still-wet gloves on to ride home again.

Even more than that though I hated those cold wintry days where it wasn't wet but cars would kick up all the dirt all over me. Giving the visor a wipe just smeared it all round and made it worse.

I'm a self-confessed fairweather biker now. It means I get to stay warm and dry in my car on wet days but at least I know to look out for poor sods on their bikes.

Riding in torrential rain can be exciting. I was on the last 20 miles of a 70 mile trip at about 10pm, mid winter in some of the heaviest rain I had ever seen and it was fantastic.

Fully waterproofed apart from my feet so I was reasonably warm but it was such an epic mission.

I done an 11 hour ride in the heavy rain from Liverpool to Portsmouth on a 125 with a top speed of 50 on L plates. Should have been about 7 hours but I got lost a few times, had to stop to rest and recover a couple from vibrations etc.

By the time I had done an hour the waterproofs had given up and I was saturated. Looking on the Forecast that evening they showed the "This is whats been happening today" and there was a band of rain where I had been riding and it had been travelling in the same direction. If I had stopped for an hour or 2 in Liverpool for breakfast I would have stayed dry.

Riding in the rain is no fun. But sometimes its unavoidable.

My first ride the day after my CBT was in a torrential downpour, and I felt fine.
Got a bit wet toward the end though, but I went to both the nearest bike shops to get some new gear.

More wary now in the rain if anything as I tend to go a tad faster than back then.

Would love to be a fair weather rider, but the reality is its so much cheaper and quicker to get the bike out on the vast majority of missions. Been a 365 biker all my life, even now I have access to a car that only gets used on things like taking the gf to a meal, going to play 11 a side etc.

Doesn't bother me as much as a light rain shower after a spell of dry weather. Inconsistent grip. Or worse, in winter when it's been dry and then rains...Errghh slimey roads.

In short.
I ride 365 if possible.

Given the choice of riding in torrential rain or sharing the bus with scally dickheads, irritating tinny mp3s blasted out on mobile phones and the like, I'd choose the bike any day.
